Final Fantasy V (OT: Jap. ファイナルファンタジーV , Fainaru Fantajī Faibu ) is the fifth part of the Final Fantasy - video game series .

In Japan it was released on December 6, 1992.

action

The plot of Final Fantasy V revolves around five heroes - the adventurer Bartz Klauser (in Japan Butz ), the princess Lenna Charlotte Tycoon , the pirate Faris Scherwiz , the old man Galuf Halm Baldesion , who has lost his memory, and his granddaughter Krile Maia Baldesion ( Kururu in Japan ) who can talk to dragons and moogle. The heroes try to prevent the four crystals that represent the individual elements of fire, earth, air and water from breaking. When the crystals break, not only does the element get out of control. The seal that holds the main antagonist captive, the evil wizard Exdeath , is also destroyed.

In the course of the game it is not possible to prevent Exdeath from returning. It has since been found that both Exdeath and Galuf come from another world. The group now switches to this other world and tries to stop Exdeath, which leads to a fight with his henchman Gilgamesh several times. However, the protagonists do not succeed in stopping Exdeath from his plan: the crystals in the second world also break and Galuf dies. In his place, Galuf's granddaughter Krile joins and both worlds merge into one.

It turns out that a long time ago people fought the power of nothing. In order to dispel them, they divided the crystals that protect the world in two. So the world was divided into two parallel halves. Exdeath restores the original condition. His real goal is to go into the interdimensional rift , the space between both worlds where nothing is sealed. He wants to make this subject to himself and let go of the numerous monsters that are in the interdimensional rift into the world. The climax of the game is the landing in this interdimensional rift, where there is a final confrontation with Exdeath, who uses nothing for himself before it devours himself and in his true form Neo-Exdeath fights the heroes, a fusion 500 years old Souls who took possession of a sacred tree and thereby ultimately became Exdeath.

Game principle and technology

Final Fantasy V impresses above all with its well-thought-out game system: the party of four can choose from 25 different professional classes and combine the skills they have learned. A healer with kung fu knowledge is just as possible as an armed dancer. This job system makes the game more challenging than that of other episodes, but at the same time also a lot more flexible.

In Final Fantasy V, as in the predecessor Final Fantasy IV, the Active Time Battle System was used, which is used in all successors up to Final Fantasy IX . In addition, the figure Gilgamesh appears for the first time in Final Fantasy V , which also receives a more or less extensive guest appearance in parts VI, VIII, XI, XII, XIV and various Game Boy Advance remakes of earlier parts.

In Final Fantasy V one has also begun to provide the dungeons with puzzles by creating passages through switches or floor panels or opening doors. Playing through the individual caves, towers, etc. has become more varied than in Part IV.

In Final Fantasy V there are two optional but very difficult bosses ( Omega and Shinryu ) for the first time . Such bosses also exist in later parts on other systems. They are not necessary battles and there is no reward for defeating them, but they are trials that professional players can face. For example, in Final Fantasy VII they are referred to as weapons .

In the GBA version, other things have also been added: four new professions, a huge optional dungeon with many additional bosses, new versions of Omega and Shinryu : Omega MKII and Neo Shinryu. There are also other super weapons , the armor with the highest defense value in the game and the like. At the end of the dungeon, the real nothing called Enuo is still waiting for the group.

Production notes

An official US version was planned under the name Final Fantasy Extreme, but never appeared. Outside of Japan it was only released in 1999 in a technically inferior version as part of the Final Fantasy Anthology for the PlayStation , which suffered from poor localization and long loading times; In addition, there is an unofficial translation of the SNES game in English on the Internet, which is linguistically more closely related to the original than the comparatively weak official version. A remake programmed by TOSE for the Game Boy Advance was released in Japan in October 2006 ; 124,840 units were sold in the first week. The US version, published in the same year, features a completely new translation that corrects the inadequacies of the previous translation. The localized European version was published in April 2007. On September 24, 2015, a remake of the classic for the PC was released with improved graphics and additional jobs.

reception

In Japan, the game sold two million times in the first two months (December 1992 - January 1993). In 1994, the anime was released in Japan Final Fantasy , whose plot 200 years after that of Final Fantasy V plays.
