After landing, the girl moves on and discovers many structures that appear stimulated by mysterious points of light that are reminiscent of stars. The heroine can collect these lights to gain new skills.

After reaching a central tower, the girl can travel to four new locations to collect stars and restore the colors of her world to statues. These new areas include a world of windmills, a lush forest, and flooded caves. On the way, the character meets many beings who help her on her journey, as well as dark creatures in the form of birds who try to devour the girl. The final power Gris receives is the ability to sing again, which brings many plants and mechanical animals back to life.

Gris eventually collects enough stars to form a constellation that leads to the sky, but the final passage is blocked by a creature that transforms into a monstrous copy of itself and swallows it entirely. She wakes up in a sea of black mud and swims to the surface. From there she climbs a tower rising from the sea and several higher fragments of the statue. At the highest point, Gris begins to sing and the power of her voice puts the statue back together. The black creature tries to devour it, but just before it is devoured by black mud, the statue comes to life and begins to sing. This makes the creature and the sea of darkness disappear. Gris and the statue embrace crying and the light and colors of the world are restored. The girl then climbs up the last constellation path.

Gris received mostly positive reviews. The review database Metacritic aggregates 40 reviews to a mean value of 84. The US magazine IGN called the game positively a “meditative, touching research journey into complex emotions”, the graphics of which were among the most beautiful in the platformer genre. The gameplay, on the other hand, is sometimes kept very simple, but sometimes also confusing for the player, so that the magazine awarded a slightly average rating overall. The Canadian magazine Destructoid ruled that Gris is “more of an experience than a game”, although typical features for games of the genre such as the need for interaction and the need to think laterally are definitely present. The magazine praised the game design and in particular the cartographic structure of the game world, which avoids the genre-inherent risk of getting into unsolvable situations by skillfully linking locations. Chris Moyse praised the graphics of the game and assessed the soundtrack as offering "sensual, multi-layered melodies that dynamically adjust to reflect what is happening on the screen". Destructoid awarded ten out of ten points.
