Riot Games is an American computer game - development company based in West Los Angeles .

The company developed the MOBA League of Legends , which was released in Europe and North America on October 27, 2009. Since purchasing the last company shares in December 2015, Riot Games has been a subsidiary of the Chinese internet company Tencent .

history

Riot Games, Inc. was founded as an indie game developer in 2006 by Brandon "Ryze" Beck and Marc "Tryndamere" Merrill in Los Angeles . The company announced their only game until 2013: League of Legends: Clash of Fates and released it in 2009 under the title League of Legends . The game is based on a free-to-play model, supported by microtransactions.

Riot Games has been hosting the League of Legends World Championships since 2011.

In 2008, Riot Games received $ 7 million from Benchmark Capital and FirstMark Capital. In 2009, Riot Games received $ 8 million from the original two donors and from Chinese technology company Tencent . In 2011 Tencent obtained a majority stake in Riot Games for a purchase price of $ 231,465,000.

Some of the employees at Riot Games are veterans of Defense of the Ancients (the template for League of Legends ) and Blizzard Entertainment, for example the former developer Steve "Guinsoo" Feak, the former founder of the website DotA-Allstars.com Steve "Pendragon" Mescon and Greg Street , former World of Warcraft Lead Systems Designer .

The headquarters of Riot Games has been West Los Angeles since November 2013 , there are also branches in Berlin , Brighton , Dublin , Hong Kong , Istanbul , Los Angeles , Mexico City , New York , St. Louis , Santiago de Chile , São Paulo , Shanghai , Sydney , Taipei and Tokyo .

At the end of 2015, Tencent acquired all shares in Riot Games.

At the end of 2016, Riot Games brought their first board game Mechs vs. Minions , which is a cooperative board game for 2-4 players, and Riot Morello, Lead Designer for Research & Development at Riot Games, wrote in 2015 that new games were being worked on.

On October 16, 2019, as part of Riot Games' 10-year League of Legends birthday event, a number of future games were announced: Legends of Runeterra (an online trading card game for PC and mobile devices), Project A (a tactical Shooter, later announced as Valorant ), Project L (a fighting game), Project F and a League of Legends eSports manager . A mobile version of LoL called League of Legends: Wild Rift , as well as a mobile version of Teamfight Tactics (release in March 2020) and an animation series called Arcane were also announced.

On April 16, 2020, Riot Games announced that it had acquired Hypixel Studios , the developer of the Minecraft- like game Hytale .

Riot Games released League of Legends in Latin America, Australia, USA, Philippines, Singapore, Vietnam, Malaysia, Thailand, Canada, South Korea, Taiwan, China, Europe, Brazil, Indonesia and Japan. In China, Tencent , Riot Games' largest shareholder, is selling the game online. In Southeast Asia, the MOBA is distributed by the Garena company.

Riot Games originally signed an international license partnership with GOA in Europe . After an eight-month partnership, Riot announced in May 2013 that it would take over the distribution of the game in Europe. As a result, they opened the European headquarters in Dublin .

Riot Games' parent company Tencent has been selling a mobile version of League of Legends called King of Glory in China since 2015 . In Europe, North America and Korea Tencent distributes the game Arena of Valor , which can also be seen as a mobile version of League of Legends .
