Hypixel is a US Minecraft - multiplayer network , which was founded on April 14, 2013. Simon Collins-Laflamme and Philippe Touchette (Hypixel Inc.). As of April 2020, the server has over 18 million unique logins from various players, making it currently the largest Minecraft server in the world. The Hypixel server runs on the Java edition of Minecraft. On December 9th, 2018 the game Hytale was announced, which is inspired by Minecraft and is developed by the newly founded company Hypixel Studios together with Riot Games .

Hypixel Studios was acquired by Riot Games in mid-April 2020.

Structure and history

Hypixel was founded on April 14, 2013 by Simon Collins-Laflamme and Philippe Touchette. Before Collins-Laflamme and Touchette founded the Minecraft server, they created their own Minecraft adventure maps and uploaded them to their YouTube channel to present them. The founders later created their own mini-games that players could play while waiting for the adventure maps . These adventure maps grew in popularity over time. The server consists of a number of different mini-games and player versus player cards and regularly offers various events on the server. The server is financed by selling special ranks with certain advantages to the users as well as by donations .

Player Numbers

On December 21, 2016, the Hypixel server reached 10 million players, later on December 13, 2018, 14 million, and on April 7, 2020, 18 million players. The server is owned by Hypixel Inc. and attracts around 2 million players every month. On April 9, 2020, the network will be the first Minecraft server in the world to reach the player mark of 100,000 players who were simultaneously on the network.

Hacker Attacks and Security

Hypixel has often had to deal with DDoS attacks from hackers. A major attack took place in September 2016 when the owners of an unknown server used Mirai , a DDoS malware , to attack Hypixel's servers. The main purpose of the attack was to move Hypixel players to another Minecraft server. In April 2018, Hypixel started using Cloudflare Spectrum for DDoS protection.

Awards

Hypixel's Minecraft server has won four world records in the Guinness Book of Records .
