history

Supercell started developing games in 2011. That year, Accel Partners invested $ 12 million in Supercell.

The first game Supercell released was the browser game Gunshine.net in 2011 . This was a precursor to Supercell's second game, Battle Buddies , which was released as a mobile app in 2012 . However, this game soon disappeared from the scene due to poor sales, with the game receiving mostly positive reviews until it was discontinued.

In 2012 the two online games Hay Day and Clash of Clans followed , both of which soon developed into commercial successes. The company's two games were reportedly grossed $ 2.4 million a day in April 2013.

In October 2013 it was announced that the Japanese companies SoftBank and GungHo Online Entertainment had acquired a 51 percent stake in the company for an estimated 1.5 billion US dollars. In June 2015, SoftBank announced that a further 22.7 percent of the shares in Supercell had been acquired by outside shareholders. SoftBank has held 73.2 percent of the shares since then and was the only external shareholder. In 2014 Supercell released the game Boom Beach , which is partly based on Clash of Clans . In 2014 Supercell developed another mobile game called Spooky Pop , which was only playable in Canada and Australia . In February 2015, the decision was made to stop developing the game because the development team saw no perspective in this game.

In April 2015, the next game Smash Land was published first in Canada and later also in Australia , but its development was also discontinued at the beginning of July 2015.

In early January 2016, a new game called Clash Royale was released on the iOS platform in selected countries. On February 16, Clash Royale was also released for the Android platform in selected countries. In March 2016, Clash Royale was released for iOS and Android around the world.

In June 2016, the Chinese Internet company Tencent bought 84.3 percent of the shares in Supercell for 8.6 billion US dollars: This purchase also included the entire company shares previously held by SoftBank. Tencent plans to buy the remaining shares in Supercell in the coming months.

The real-time strategy game Brawl Stars was released for iOS in 2017, but initially only in a few countries. In December 2018 this game was released for iOS and Android worldwide.

On August 26, 2019, the beta version of the new game Rush Wars was released. The game has not been offered by Supercell since November 30, 2019 because the results from the beta test were not satisfactory.
