Brawl Stars is a real-time strategy game for mobile devices developed and published by game developer Supercell .

development

The game was initially only available for iOS devices in the Canadian , Norwegian , Finnish , Swedish and Danish app stores, but Supercell was planning a global release as well as an Android version. On June 24th, 2018 it was announced that there would be a beta release for Android devices. The global release for all platforms took place after a year and a half in the beta version on December 12, 2018. The app is based on the free-to-play model. For 2020 the developer Supercell has announced an extensive update with new content and functions.

Gameplay

To play, the player needs one or more of the so-called brawlers , the characters in Brawl Stars. These are divided into the six rarity levels Rare, Super Rare, Epic, Mythical, Legendary and Chromatic. There are also Milestone Brawlers and the First Brawler (Shelly). The milestone brawlers can only be reached by reaching trophy milestones. To unlock the other brawlers , the player must open brawl boxes that can be reached via the brawl pass . You get normal brands by doing well in the game. 200 accessible brands are possible every day. Little by little, however, achievable brands are being added. The so-called megaboxes , which can be bought in the shop and unlocked for free in the brawl pass or trophy path, contain more power points and a higher chance of new brawlers. The content of a megabox is roughly equivalent to the content of ten brawl boxes. At the beginning of the game, each player has unlocked a first brawler (Shelly). Brawlers (except Milestone Brawlers) also appear in the shop from time to time. The rarer brawlers also cost more jewels accordingly. Apart from brawlers, there are power points in brawl boxes with which the player can improve the offensive and defensive stats of his brawlers, coins and, with a low probability, bonus items such as token doublers.

By meeting opponents, the brawler charges a special attack, the so-called superskill , an individual ability of each brawler that can be used once until the next charge. As soon as a brawler has reached power level 9, star power can be found in the boxes with a low probability of 1%. These occasionally also appear in the shop, where they can be purchased for 2000 coins or 170 jewels. This special ability gives the Brawer certain advantages. You can recognize a brawler with star power by the fact that the Brawl Stars logo is displayed below him. In addition, from power level 7 gadgets for every brawler can be found. These are another special ability that can be used two or three times per match, depending on the brawler. A gadget can be pulled from a normal brawl box with a chance of about 2%.

Brawlers

Every brawler has a certain number of lives. When it is used up, the brawler dies. Depending on the game mode, the game ends or he respawns after a certain time. There are currently 38 brawlers in the game (as of August 2020). A list of the brawlers can be found in the following table:

Brawl Pass

With the Brawl Pass, the game was expanded to include a new progression system in the form of a Battle Pass in May 2020 . On this path you have to earn brands that you can earn through good play in order to unlock rewards. After each "season", the rewards are reset and you can collect new ones again. The Brawl Pass is available in both a buyable and a free version. The free version is available to all players. The buyable version is available for 169 jewels. In the buyable version there are better and more rewards and also a guaranteed brawler. This belongs to a rarity "Chromatic" introduced for the Brawl Pass.

There are also various missions called quests . These consist of mastering certain tasks, such as B. defeat 12 opponents, do a certain number of damage points, heal yourself for a certain number of hit points or win a certain number of matches to get a certain number of counters. This is then regulated again according to brawler or game mode.

Currencies

There are currently three different currencies in the game: jewels, coins and star points.

The player gets coins from brawl boxes, the trophy path and the shop in which they are sold for jewels. They are used to improve the brawlers, as well as to buy power points and star powers in the shop.

The star points used to buy exclusive skins or special offers are obtained by advancing the rank of brawlers, as a season reward (more on this under ranks ) or as a reward at the end of the power play season (see power play ). They cannot be bought.

Jewels are offered in the shop for real money and can also be found in the Brawl Pass. Gems are used to purchase boxes, brawlers, gold coins, token doublers, skins, the brawl pass and some specials in the shop.

Game modes

Brawl Stars contains different game modes. Power play, duo and solo showdown, jewel hunt and brawl ball can be played every day. The other events (bounty hunt, siege, and vault robbery) alternate each day.

Jewel hunting

The goal here is to collect jewels. You can get these from the jewel mine, which is in the middle of the map. A jewel appears every few seconds. Similar to the bounty hunt mode, the collected jewels are temporarily collected from a player and are lost when he is done so that the opponent can collect them. The team needs at least ten jewels to win. When a team reaches this limit, a 15-second countdown begins, during which the team must not lose so many jewels that they have fewer than ten remaining. If she manages that, the game ends victorious for her. But if you lose too many jewels, the game continues until a team has at least ten jewels again and the countdown starts again. If both teams have the same number of jewels with ten or more jewels, the clock does not start counting down until one team has more than the other.

Solo showdown

This is the only mode where each player plays alone and does not respawn after death.

Ten players play against each other and the goal is to be the last to survive. To make the game more exciting, the map is getting smaller and smaller, see Battle Royale . Chests that can be destroyed by the player are scattered around the map. If the player collects the power cube that is now in place of the chest , he will be strengthened, which increases his life and attack points. These power dice are also obtained when killing opponents, depending on how many the defeated opponent himself had. The following applies: number of power dice from the opponent divided by two. If the opponent only had one or no power dice at all, one dice still remains. Since an update in spring 2019, effects are occasionally added during the showdown. Before that, this only existed at special events. The following effects are available:

  • Robot rage : In the game a huge robot spawned occasionally attacks the nearest player. If it is destroyed, it drops three power dice. He also sees the players when they are hidden in bushes or bushes.
  • Meteor shower : Meteorites fall from the sky at short intervals. These can destroy walls and bushes and do 2000 damage.
  • Energy Drinks : Potions sometimes appear in the game. These increase the damage and speed of a brawler for a short time.
  • Healing fields : Areas covered with green mushrooms appear, which heal the brawler for 1000 hit points per second.
Duo showdown

Similar to the Showdown game mode, the principle of everyone versus everyone applies , with the difference that there are five teams of two. The power cubes that are collected from the boxes are credited to both team members. If a player from one team is killed, he will be revived after 15 seconds, provided that the other player from the team is still alive. The defeated player loses his power cubes and starts at zero. A team lost when both players died. In this game mode, too, the map shrinks continuously.

Brawl ball

In this mode, two teams play against each other. Each team tries to get the ball into the opposing goal. While in possession of the ball, a player can only move with the ball and shoot it, but cannot attack opponents. If the player uses his special attack, the ball rolls faster and further. The game ends when a team scores two goals or when the game time is up. The team that is in the lead wins. If there is no winner after the time has expired, there is a one-minute extension during which all obstacles on the map disappear. According to the golden goal principle, the game ends immediately when a goal is scored. If there is still no winner after extra time, the game will end in a draw.

siege

Similar to the robbery of a safe, each team has to destroy an assembly tower of the opposing team during a siege. This defense system shoots at the enemies approaching it in a defined area with 1000 damage per second. In order to destroy the facility, it is necessary to construct a siege robot that will damage the assembly tower and attack it at the same time. To set up a siege robot, you have to collect bolts that appear randomly on the field and keep them for a short time. The number of bolts determines the level of the bot and thus its damage points. After a fixed time, the siege of the team that has collected more bolts than the other begins: the robot runs from its own base over to the opposing base and on the way also attacks guns that have been erected in its path. He also attacks the opponents himself within a small radius, but his main target is the assembly tower. If the robot is destroyed and the siege is over, another countdown starts and the players can collect screws again during this time. The team that didn't build a bot keeps its bolts, the other team starts collecting from scratch. The game is over when a team's assembly tower is destroyed or when the game is over. Then the team whose assembly tower has suffered the least damage wins.

Bounty hunting

The aim of the game mode is to end up having more bounty stars than the opposing team. Each player starts as an individual rating with two stars. For each defeated opponent, the team receives the opponent's stars and the player himself receives one star in his individual rating. This continues until you, as a single player, have seven stars. If you take out other opponents, your own number of points remains at seven. After you have been defeated you start again with two stars. The more bounty stars a player receives in a row, the more important it is for the opposing team to knock him out, as all his stars are credited to the opposing team when he is knocked out. If one team has more stars than the other, the team with more points wins. If the time runs out and both teams have the same number of stars, there will be a tie.

Vault robbery

In this game mode, each team has a safe. The aim of the game is to destroy the opponent's safe without the opponent destroying his own. If no safe has been destroyed after the time has expired, the team that has done more damage to the opposing safe wins. In the event of a tie there is a tie.

Power play

Powerplay is a special game mode that can only be played by brawlers with a star power. The event to be played changes daily. In the power play mode, certain trophies are collected, which are converted into star points at the end of the power play season. In addition, the world's best players can still get star points through the world rankings. The power play mode has no influence on the normal trophies.

Special events

These special modes are only playable on weekends. Trophies cannot be lost or won in these modes, and the tokens won are not deducted from the daily 200.

Robo Rumble

In this game mode, three players compete in an arena, they have to defend their vault against attacking robots. The game ends either after two minutes or if the team's vault has fallen. Similar to boss fights, the opponents become stronger and harder to defeat after each game.

All against one

In this game mode, five players have to defeat another player who is significantly stronger than usual, but does not regenerate passively. He continuously loses life even if he is not attacked. The game ends when the boss has been defeated, or after two minutes.

Boss fight

In this game mode there is a big robot with a lot of hit points and three brawlers who try to destroy it in the shortest possible time. If a brawler is defeated, he will be re-spawned after 20 seconds, unless his two teammates are already done. If you have defeated him, the difficulty is increased in the next round, so the robot spawns little robots, gets an angry effect, shoots rockets and lasers, which get stronger with anger. The level of difficulty ranges from normal to extremely difficult XVI .

Super city chaos

In Super City Chaos game modes, it's similar to Boss Fight. A huge monster is walking around trying to destroy the city on the map. The three players must try to defeat the monster before it destroys the whole city.

Former game modes

Strong fight (playable until January 2020)

Based on the game principle of bounty hunt, only that here the decommissioned showdown maps are used. This is an AVA mode (all against all), which means that ten players try to collect as many stars as possible. At the beginning you have two stars, which are displayed above the brawler. For each enemy killed, a star is added and you get the number of stars the other had above your head in a separate bar. Whoever has the most stars in the bar at the end wins. The game ends after two minutes.

In January 2020, the development team announced that they would be removing Starkampf along with takedown from the game.

Takedown (playable until January 2020)

There is a giant robot. Whoever inflicts the most damage on him wins the round. Powercubes are dropped on the map at short intervals. The game ends once the robot is defeated.

Ghostfight (special event during Halloween 2019)

All brawlers are see-through and constantly lose HP. Brawlers with a lot of HP are drawn off more, brawlers with little HP less HP. If you cause damage to the enemy, you get HP. If you kill the enemy, you get at least 1000 extra HP. This mode was only playable during the Halloween period.

Gift robbery (special event during Christmas 2019)

This mode is similar to that of "Brawlball": Here, too, two teams of three play against each other. The difference is that no ball has to go into the opposing goal, but a gift the size of a ball has to be brought from the opposing area into your own area. The gifts are thrown and not shot on the ground as in brawl ball. While in possession of a gift, a player can only move with the gift and throw it, but cannot attack opponents. If the player uses his special attack, the throw is significantly further. The game ends when a team has brought two presents to the home area or when the game time is up. The team that is in the lead wins. If there is no winner after the time has elapsed, there is a one-minute extension during which all obstacles on the map disappear. According to the golden goal principle, the game ends immediately when a gift has been brought home. If there is still no winner after extra time, the game will end in a draw. This mode is only playable during the Christmas season.

Hotzone (special event in January 2020 and May 2020)

In this mode there were one or two marked circular eponymous zones in the middle of the map. A point was scored when a brawler managed to stay in a zone without leaving or dying. Scoring was interrupted if the brawler died or an opposing brawler entered the zone. When starting again, the counting started over. The team with the most points won. If there was a tie, there was a tie. Special feature: This mode was slightly modified in the May update and brought back into the game for three weeks.

Additional functions

Friends

In Brawl Stars it is possible to play together with friends. You can send friends an invitation through social networks, invite players you recently played with, or enter a friend's code. If the potential friend accepts the invitation, he appears in the friends list and you can see whether the friend is online or when he was last online. You can also see the player's profile.

Clubs

In addition to friends, there is also the option of joining a club or creating one yourself. Every club member can see who is online or who was last online and when. The maximum number of members in a club is 100 members who can all write to each other in one club chat. There are currently three different ranks in a club that the leader of the club can assign. The lowest rank is the member who has no special power in the club. Elder is the next level. The elder can remove members from the club. The next level, the vice leader, can demote elders and remove members from the club and promote them to vice leader or elder. The leader has the option of demoting any player or removing them from the club. If he promotes a vice leader to leader, he loses the leader level and becomes vice leader himself.

E-Sports (Brawl Stars Championship)

There is a monthly opportunity to take part in a tournament within the game. The aim is to win a total of 15 games in five different game modes without losing more than three times. For reasons of fairness, every brawler has power level 10 in this tournament. In addition to prizes such as star points or star brands (there are no more), if you have achieved 15 victories, you have the opportunity to set up an eSport team and compete against other winning teams . In the further course of the year there is a worldwide tournament for prize money, which is held at different places.

Brawls Stars on Social Media

YouTube

There are now a lot of YouTubers who earn their money on YouTube by uploading videos about Brawl Stars. They make their living mainly from advertising on YouTube, like other YouTubers. However, there is a special feature: In the Brawl Stars app you can enter a "Creator Code" , whereby the respective "Content Creator" gets a small part of it when buying with jewels. There are also links to videos under the menu item "News". In their videos, the YouTubers play Brawl Stars, open boxes in Brawl Stars or do other things related to Brawl Stars. The YouTubers also often give the brawlers names or, for example, change the gender of a brawler, as in the case of Nita from female to male, or even invent their own merch in connection with brawl stars, such as B. the merch "DerNita" or "Schei ** boxer" (based on the brawlers Nita and El Primo).
