GungHo Online Entertainment, Inc. ( Japanese ガ ン ホ ー ・ オ ン ラ イ ン ・ エ ン タ ー テ イ メ ン ト 株式会社 , Ganhō Onrain Entāteimento Kabushiki-gaisha ) is a Japanese manufacturer and publisher of video games . GungHo Online Entertainment is best known for hosting the MMORPG Ragnarok Online . The company also celebrated financial success in 2013, when the game Puzzle & Dragons accounted for 91% of sales of 1.6 billion US dollars.

history

The company was named ONSale Co., Ltd. Founded on July 1, 1998, which was the United States , a joint venture between Softbank and eCOST.com and focused on interactive online auction business.

2000 The company is moving to Tokyo , Japan , has its headquarters there and now provides ASP- using auction systems.
2002 Another structural change follows, the company now concentrates on online game services and primarily hosts the Japanese server for Ragnarok Online .
2004 In a joint venture with Game Arts , the company is now also developing online games.
2005 As of March, the company is now listed on the Hercules Nippon New Market of the Osaka Securities Exchange . In August an investment is made in the mobile games manufacturer G-Mode and in December of that year the self-developed MMORPG Emil Chronicle Online is published.
2006 The contract to distribute Ragnarok Online 2: The Gate of the World starts in August of that year.
2007 In October, GungHo Works, Inc. is formed to work on Ragnarok DS . One month later, in November, video game assets are acquired from Interchannel ( iXIT Corporation ).
2008 Gravity Co., Ltd is acquired as a subsidiary in April.
2013 GungHo Acquires Grasshopper Manufacture in January ; the studio behind titles like No More Heroes and Lollipop Chainsaw .
2016 Softbank is no longer the majority owner of GungHo, selling most of its approximately 23.47% stake in GungHo for more than $ 685 million. The offer will be accepted by GungHo on June 22nd of the year, making the company independent.
