Grandia Online ( グ ラ ン デ ィ ア オ ン ラ イ ン ; Gurandeia Onrain ) is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game for Microsoft Windows produced by Game Arts and marketed by GungHo Online Entertainment in 2009 . The game is currently the last offshoot of the Grandia series.

The game was officially announced in 2004, but the release date has been postponed several times, and celebrated his debut as a beta version in July 2009. It is also the first game of the Grandia series, which as online multiplayer was published game, exclusively for Microsoft Windows developed so it was not published on console for the first time. This game features BigWorld technology and the music was composed by Noriyuki Iwadare , who composed the music for all Grandia parts.

The game was decommissioned on September 28, 2012.

action

The plot is a prequel to the original game Grandia and takes place in the Age of Genesis (in German: "Epoch of Birth"), which is characterized by adventures and discoveries. This game world can also be assigned to the genre of fantasy .

All players start their journey by escaping the petrification of a village, which is being petrified by dark forces, making it uninhabitable. Here every player meets the sorceress Liete (known from the first part of the series ), who introduces one into the game world. The players encounter playable and non-playable characters who accompany one through the game and lead to places such as the Pulse of Gaia , to a foiled country, where it is speculated that it is the source of corruption and to the home country of the ancient Icarians, known for their bravery and magic. New acts between Gaia and the Icarieans were planned, but were never made public.

The player is able to create his own character and assign it to one of the three races. The races that animate this game world are the adventurous and adaptable people , the childish Coltas with a hairy tail as a characteristic and the imposing, belligerent Ralgas .

Gameplay

When discovering the game world, one of the tasks is to solve the secrets of the mysterious petrification of their villages. During the game there is interaction with other players and fights against opponents, but also against other players.

The whole game was displayed in a 3-D environment, but before playing, you had to register with GungHo Online Entertainment in order to access the game's server. After this registration the game could be downloaded from the official Grandia Online website . The game was also available for purchase on disc in retail stores, probably through magazines that offered DVDs as an add-on. Finally you have to log in and the creation of a character begins. You had the option of customizing your face, eyes, hair, gender and initial statistics. The initial statistics were weaknesses and strengths. After entering the game world, you got new equipment and dyes, with which you could express your affiliation with a color.

The characters were controlled from the third-person perspective and with a camera that could be rotated in all directions. You could ask the characters to walk, run and jump. The game's user interface has a chat through which players could communicate, there was also a small map for navigation that indicated the locations of objects and buildings in the area.

Using the keyboard and mouse , commands could be given and the characters were controlled. In the respective villages, players were able to look for new tasks and accept assignments to learn more about the game world. It was also possible that you could create your own partner without having to rely on a real player. Each player was allowed to create a maximum of 16 pawns and to let them flow into a group in the game.

Fights take place in real time and this makes this offshoot stand out from the entire Grandia series. Many elements from the predecessors were retained, however, so you could gain experience points and reach new levels to become stronger.

development

Following the announcement in late 2004, a collaboration with GungHo Online Entertainment under the code name Projekt: GO was announced. The game's first appearance followed on the Tokyo Game Show in 2005, which was held in Tokyo , Japan . Development of the game followed shortly after the completion of Grandia III , which was released in early 2005. The heads of Grandia Online Development were Morishita Yoshikazu (GungHo) and Yoshitada Iwata (Game Arts). The inspiration was taken from Ragnarok Online .

In early 2007 there were announcements that GungHo would not realize the project when Game Arts announced that it was selling the game to online Game Revolution Number 1 for ¥ 2.6 billion and rebranding it as Grandia Zero . However, the rights were given back and during this time there were rumors that the game could no longer be published.

In April 2009, the progress of Grandia Online was published and an official countdown on the website posted on April 21st indicated the publication. However, the game was not developed, it was only an open and playable beta version, which was finally released in July of that year. To celebrate the release, Game Arts announced that it will offer the first part of Grandia on the PlayStation Network . An extended beta version started in August of that year.

music

Noriyuki Iwadare composed all of the background music. There were also dubbings of various anime and video game actors. The players themselves also had their own voices, which could be expressed with existing recordings. The theme song Earth Trip , sung by Minami Kuribayashi , was released as a single in 2009. With the purchase of the limited version of the single, you got a code to get special equipment in the game.
