Grandia III (グ ラ ン デ ィ ア III; Gurandia Surī ) is a role-playing game for the PlayStation 2 that was produced by Game Arts and published by Square Enix . The game debuted in Japan in August 2005 and was released in North America in February 2006 . It is the first regular Grandia title that was not released in Europe . As in every Grandia title , the music was composed by Noriyuki Iwadare and the theme music was sung by J-Pop singer Miz with the song In the Sky .

Gameplay

The player plays the protagonist Yuki and his companions in a 3-D world and together they have to fight their way through obstacles. The combat system has the same style as in the previous Grandia parts. During the game encounter different characters and creatures that Guardians (to German : Guardian) call to his journey and try to help him. In contrast to the previous Grandia games, instead of using a world map, you travel with a flight ship to reach locations.

Battles can be fought on the field by encountering an enemy wandering aimlessly around the field. As already mentioned, this game uses the same combat system as in its previous parts. During a fight, images represent all characters and enemies on the battlefield. As soon as the picture reaches the choice mode, the game pauses and the player has the option to attack, defend himself, use items or flee from combat. If a field has been completed and you repeatedly fight these monsters, you have the chance to acquire rarer items.

action

Characters

The game focuses on the 16-year-old boy Yuki , who dreams of becoming a fighter pilot like his idol, the legendary Sky Captain Schmidt .

In addition, the following characters are relevant to the plot:

  • Rotts , Yuki's friend, he uses his own magic to build an airplane with which he tries to fly over the ocean. However, he is distracted by his mother Miranda due to interventions.
  • Alfina , a lovely young girl who has the ability to communicate with Sacred Beasts (holy beasts, the guardians).
  • Alonso , a gamer who dreams of completing his world map.
  • Ulf , a simple man with a kite-like pet named Shiba .
  • Dahna , a cynical teller with a hidden soft side.
  • Hect , a grumpy musician from a troubled village.

The following characters count as antagonists:

  • Emellious , Alfina's brother , can communicate with the guards just like his sister. However, he uses his duties as a communicator to seek the power of the Xorn and thereby become a god. Xorn is a guardian with the power of darkness.
  • Kornell , the wizard of Emellious , a tall imposing man with an iron glove.
  • Violetta in love with Emellious .
  • La-llim , a male demon-like being who uses artifacts in the form of crystal-like skulls to summon undead beasts.
  • Gray , Emellious's right hand man and a devious strategist.

In order for the heroes to face their opponents, they must travel around the game world to meet the guardians and gain their power. These include Gryph the eagle, Drak the dragon, Yoat the ram, Seiba the unicorn and Unama the dolphin.

history

The game takes place in a nameless game world, which consists of the main continent surrounded by Lake Belion and only one person flew over this lake in the story. That person was Sky Captain Schmidt . Yuki comes from the village called Anfog , which is on the Titalos Islands. The game world gives many opportunities to move around the world by flying, so you can fly on both kites and flight ships that use a magical source to fly. The holy beings or the guardians came into this world after a war had broken out in their own world to bring peace to both worlds.

Around 5000 years ago, the game world was almost destroyed by this war. Here the 12 guards stopped the game world from complete destruction and guided the survived people to the safety of their world.

In the present, Yuki and Rotts are building a flying ship in the hope that Yuki will become the second person to fly over the ocean. After 20 failures, the last project can be started. However, a problem arises on the final flight. The mother Miranda , from whom the projects remained a secret, was stowed in the plane, which creates the problem that the flying ship could not fly high enough due to its weight.

After an argument between the mother and him, in the air, they see a girl who is being chased by several men. Yuki decides to land and ends up in a forest. He and Miranda immediately defend the girl. It turns out that her name is Alfina and that she is a communicator, which explains the hunt for her. Together they set off on a journey and become involved in the story of Alfina.

development

At first was Grandia III in March 2005 in the weekly edition of Famitsu mentioned magazine. It was mentioned that Game Arts and Square Enix will only release the game for the PlayStation 2 , as will the Grandia Xtreme offshoot . The project manager was the director Hidenobu Takahashi , who had previously also directed the production of Grandia II . He said that this part of the Grandia series remains loyal and uses themes such as adventure, drama and dreams, also follows a more adult sensibility. The characters were designed by Yō Yoshinari and the scenarios by Takahiro Hasebe . Both previously worked on the original Grandia . The CGI movie scenes were created by Mikitaka Kurasawa , who also worked with Capcom for Onimusha . According to Square Enix, the length of the cutscenes in the game is that of three movies. The combat system has its roots in the previous Grandia parts and is described as very complex but easy to understand. In April 2005 an official website for the game was opened, after which the release for August of that year was announced.

The English language version was announced in December 2005 and previewed on the Square Enix website. It was announced that the release will take place in North America in February 2006. In January 2006, the release date was announced, it was February 14, 2006. It was also said that Game Arts was working on the Grandia Online project, which was announced at the time for the same year.

music

The music from Grandia III was composed, as in all Grandia parts, by Noriyuki Iwadare and in August 2005 a soundtrack album entitled Grandia III Original Soundtrack was released on the record company Two-Five Records , in Japan. The album has two CDs that house the melodies from the game. The theme music was sung by Japanese singer Miz , entitled In the Sky , and the accompanying single was released the day before the video game was released in Japan. Buyers who pre-ordered the game received an exclusive soundtrack album in which three tracks were recorded exclusively live by the game's symphony orchestra, including the sung song To the Moon , sung by Kaori Kawasumi , who also performed on Grandia Xtreme . In September 2005, the title Melk Ruins was offered for free download on the official Japanese website. The title was not featured on the soundtrack album. Many well-known Japanese-speaking and English-speaking anime and video game actors were used for the dubbing.
