Grandia II ( Japanese グ ラ ン デ ィ ア II ; Gurandia Tsū) is a computer role-playing game produced by Game Arts for the Dreamcast , PlayStation 2 and the PC . Although the story of Grandia II does not tie in with the first part Grandia , it is the official second title in the series of the same name . The game was first released in August 2000, in Japan . It was then published in North America and Europe , but only in English.

action

The plot revolves around Ryudo, a geohound (a kind of mercenary ), and his talking bird, Skye. Together they accept an order from the church to accompany Elena - a singer from Granas - as bodyguards on her way to Garmia Tower. Once at Garmia Tower, the plot revolves and Ryudo and Skye have to travel around the world to save them.

Combat system

The battle system of Grandia II works similarly to that of the predecessor:

A time bar shows when the protagonists of the fight (party members and monsters) can give a command. Until this is then carried out, it takes some time. B. attacked or conjured up. The special thing about the Grandias combat system is the ability to interrupt (or cancel) attacks by opponents if they are in the time between the command and the execution. So it is possible to survive battles against boss opponents without having to accept a hit.

There are also various strategies to avoid damage during combat or to cause more damage, such as counterattacks (attacking an opponent shortly before their attack) or evasive maneuvers.

In Grandia II, spells are learned independently of the character via so-called Mana Eggs . These have the possibility of "learning" certain spells (each spell in five levels), and the character who is equipped with the egg can then cast them (if he has enough magic points)

Furthermore, each character has their own special skills that can be developed or learned in the course of the game (order and strength can be completely determined by the player).

As a support there are also skill books , which work like mana eggs on the principle, only they do not provide new spells, but increase, for example, the HP or the intelligence of a character permanently.

more details

Grandia II was originally developed for the Sega Dreamcast , but was ported to the PlayStation 2 and the PC in 2002. It offered outstanding graphics and music for its time. The PlayStation 2 version only had 20 minutes more cutscenes.

The Sega Dreamcast version was the 64th best-selling game in 2000, in Japan, with 198,354 units sold.

As part of the Game Arts Game Archives Festival , the computer game was published on the PlayStation 3 on November 19, 2014 under the PS2 Classics category , but only in Japan.

On August 24, 2015, a revised HD version called the 15th Anniversary Edition was released worldwide via Steam . What is new here is that the version is based on the Dreamcast version and, in addition to the better graphics, the choice between English and Japanese language synchronization is made available, and a new level of difficulty has been added. Finally, it was also possible to transfer your old saved games from the Dreamcast. One day after the release there was already the first patch with the title 1.02. There have been a number of improvements, the video sequences have been adapted to the 4K format, the option to set different tones with a volume and many other little things have been released and improved.

In August 2018 it was announced that the title would be released worldwide as " HD Remaster " together with Grandia in winter 2019 for Nintendo Switch . The title was playable for the first time at PAX 2018 in Seattle . The original release period was not adhered to, but in June 2019 GungHo announced further information that the game will also contain German and French texts that were not available in the original version.
