( Fallén , 1807)

Orthotylus tenellus is a species of bug from the family of soft bugs (Miridae).

features

The bugs are 4.2 to 4.7 millimeters long. The species of the genus Orthotylus are predominantly green in color. Many are extremely similar and are therefore very difficult to determine based on external characteristics. The host plants of the respective individuals are therefore an important indicator. Orthotylus tenellus is one of the more easily identifiable species of the genus. It has a translucent, pale, yellow-green base color and the compound eyes are characteristically black. The first antenna segment does not have long hair.

Occurrence and habitat

The species is common in Europe and North Africa. In Germany it is widespread and not uncommon. It is more common in the northwest than in the east and south. So far only individual finds have been documented from Austria.

Way of life

The bugs live on deciduous trees, especially oaks ( Quercus ), ash trees ( Fraxinus ) and hazelnuts ( Corylus ), and more rarely on other species. They feed on zoophytophag, whereby the nymphs mainly suckle on the plants, the imagines on various insects and their stages of development, such as aphids . With sufficient prey availability on the plants, the species can also be found on maples ( Acer ), linden ( Tilia ), pears ( Pyrus ) and others. The adult bugs are very nimble and active in flight. You can see them from mid-June to early August at the latest; occasionally they appear from the end of May.
