Clash of Clans (. English, translated clash of clans , abbreviated CoC ) is a MMO - strategy game of the Finnish game developer Supercell for mobile devices ( smart phones , tablet computers ).

The game has been available as an app for Apple's iOS operating system since August 2012 and for the Android operating system since October 2013 . Clash of Clans is the app with the highest sales overall in the iOS app store .

    Game content

    Gameplay

The game combines aspects of a building strategy game with those of a real-time combat strategy game and a tower defense game . A permanent internet connection is required to play.

At the beginning, the player finds a small village set in a fantasy world with graphics in comic style. In the course of the game, based on a simple economic system with four currencies (gold, elixir, dark elixir and jewels), he can add a variety of other buildings and improve existing ones. The core element of the game is attacking other players' villages in order to get resources. The player's base is persistent , which means that he can continuously develop his base, even if the village is destroyed by other players, only resources can be lost. The buildings can be arranged in any way so that the village is optimally protected against enemy attacks.

There is no explicit goal of the game, but the focus is primarily on the further development of the village. Progress is limited by the necessary use of resources and the real-time construction processes. In addition, the social component in the form of grouping together to form clans also plays an important role.

    building

The village is made up of different buildings that are unlocked in the course of the game. There are stores in which the resources are stored, and mines, pumps and drills in which they are extracted. There are buildings for the attack, such as barracks, in which the troops are produced, or the laboratory, which enables them to be improved. Other buildings are used for defense, although there are many different variants that differ, for example, in their range and whether they can only attack individual troops or many at once. The sensible arrangement, especially of the defensive buildings in combination with walls, plays a central role in repelling enemy attacks. Most buildings can be upgraded, which increases their level and, like building new buildings, costs resources and takes some time. A single improvement can take up to several weeks, although the number of improvement processes taking place in parallel is limited. The improvements that can be made and the buildings that can be built depend on the level of the town hall, which determines the progress of the village.

    Struggles

Before attacking, the player must assemble an army from various units, often modeled on mythical beings, with different strengths and abilities. There are also various spells, heroes and siege machines available to support. The production of these and the troops takes a few minutes of waiting time.

Using the search for opponents, the players are then suggested, one after the other, the villages of other players as targets. As soon as one meets the requirements of the player, he starts the attack and a three-minute timer begins. The player can place units outside the village that attack the enemy buildings. They act on their own and choose the buildings they attack according to specified criteria, without the player being able to influence it. Gradually they destroy the enemy village while being attacked by its defenses, so that the army loses its effectiveness in the course of the attack. The fight ends as soon as all units have been killed by defending the village, the village is completely destroyed or the time has run out. If at least one star is achieved, the attack is considered won. Stars are obtained by destroying the town hall, more than half of the village and for complete destruction.

The individual troops each have special skills, strengths and weaknesses, so choosing the right strategy plays an important role in the composition of the army. For example, while some units can fly over walls, others prioritize the elimination of the defense when determining the attacked building or can attack enemy buildings in ranged combat. In addition, spells can make the troops stronger for a short time or weaken the defense temporarily or permanently. Heroes have special abilities that can be triggered once per attack and make them particularly strong for a short time. The siege machines transport troops with them that they can let out in the middle of the village.

After the attack, the player receives or loses trophies depending on the number of stars achieved, which are deducted or credited to the attacked person and based on which the players are sorted into a league system. The troops deployed cannot be re-deployed regardless of whether they survived the battle. The player receives the stolen resources plus bonuses depending on the league in his warehouse.

    Clans

Clans represent the social component of the game. Up to 50 players can form a clan. Within a clan, they can communicate with each other via in-game chat and support each other by sending troops, spells and siege engines. Clan games take place regularly in which the whole clan collects points by completing various tasks in order to receive rewards.

Clans can compete against each other in clan wars . Each clan is given a similarly strong opponent clan. After a one-day preparation phase, the combat phase begins, which is just as long, in which each player has two attacks on opposing villages of his choice. Due to the possibility of a precise analysis of the opposing village and the corresponding planning of the attack, the strategic aspect is even more in the foreground. In the end, the clan that has collected more stars wins, whereby only the best attack on each village is rated. In addition, there is the clan war leagues as a monthly competition in which eight clans compete against each other and fought a simplified clan war against each other for a week.

    Construction worker base

In addition to the normal village, there is also the construction worker base. This is similar in many aspects to the normal village and can be played almost completely autonomously by it, the resources and trophies are also managed separately. However, there are also differences, especially when attacking. Players can only attack each other in parallel in duels. Whoever gets more stars from the other wins the fight and receives a certain amount of resources three times every 22 hours depending on the number of trophies. In addition, the troops can still be changed during the attack and they are immediately ready again after the attack.

    Business model

Clash of Clans is based on the free-to-play business model. Downloading the app and access to the online servers are free, the game is financed rather from in-app sales . In addition to the gold pass, which can be purchased every month and for the duration of which allows faster game progress, jewels in particular can be bought this way. These can be converted into other resources or waiting times can be shortened. In contrast to the freemium business model, with the exception of some cosmetic content, all game content is completely free of charge if the player invests more time. In some cases, the use of inn app purchases is even considered dishonorable.

    reception

    success

In 2012 and 2013, Clash of Clans regularly took top positions in the download charts of app stores from Apple, Google and other providers. Already at the end of 2012, Supercell was earning more money in the iOS app store with its two successful titles, Clash of Clans being the more important, than Electronic Arts , the largest company in the industry, with almost 1000 titles combined. In the first quarter of 2013 alone (when Clash of Clans was not yet available for Android), Supercell had net sales of $ 178 million and an operating profit of $ 106 million. At the end of the first quarter of 2013, Supercell was making $ 2.4 million daily. All in all , Clash of Clans was the most economically successful game app of 2013. The success of Clash of Clans contributed significantly to the fact that the majority stake in Supercell in October 2013 in one of the largest takeovers of all time in the game industry for 1.5 Billion US dollars was sold to the Japanese media company Softbank and its subsidiary GungHo . In the second quarter of 2019, Clash of Clans was still among the ten top-selling game apps.

In 2016 the game Clash Royale came on the market, which is an offshoot of Clash of Clans .

    criticism

The success of Clash of Clans also brought the game and its developer various awards. For example, in 2013 the game won the prestigious award from the trade magazine Develop in the “Best New IP” category.

According to Tobias Hanraths from Spiegel Online , Clash of Clans has "not wrongly earned its top title thanks to its friendly comic design and smooth operation". Benedikt Fuest von der Welt also attests to the game that it uses "masterfully" the principles of free-to-play games with low entry barriers and quick successes at the beginning. The Kronen Zeitung notes that Clash of Clans creates “a certain addiction through a reward spiral with achievements that improve over the course of the game”. In the magazine for computer game research Paidia, Jochen Koubek attributes an “astonishing complexity and depth” to the game. It demands and negotiates values such as friendship, solidarity, loyalty, honor, respect, willingness to take risks, justice, power, achievement or patience. The Landesmedienzentrale Baden-Württemberg describes Clash of Clans as a "structure and strategy game that is attractively designed for children and young people". In addition to the addiction factor, it also warns of the “cleverly involved system of in-app purchases” that entices players to spend money.
