Overcooked is a cooperative cooking simulation game developed by Ghost Town Games and published by Team17 . Up to four players control chefs in a wide variety of kitchens that are filled with obstacles and dangers in order to prepare meals quickly and in compliance with a time limit and to process certain orders. The game was released in 2016 for Microsoft Windows , PlayStation 4 and Xbox One . A version for Nintendo Switch was released on July 27, 2017 .
A sequel, Overcooked 2 , was released in August 2018 .
Gameplay
The players in Overcooked take on the role of cooks in a kitchen who prepare meals by cutting and cooking ingredients and then serving them. Then the dirty plates are washed. Since there is a time limit, the orders given to the players during the round must be processed as quickly as possible by delivering the desired meal. Usually several orders of different types (e.g. soups and burgers) have to be delivered at the same time, which is why it is necessary for all players to work together in order to complete the tasks efficiently. For every correctly placed order there are points (shown as coins) with a bonus ("tip") if the order was placed earlier than necessary. If the given dish does not match the requested order, there are no points and the players have just wasted time. The aim is to collect as many points as possible within the time limit. The players are rated according to a 3-star system, depending on how many points have been achieved.
Cooking is made more difficult because each level has a different structure. The stations for the ingredients, the cutting boards, the stoves and ovens, the dispensing station and other elements are rearranged in each level and are usually scattered over the entire kitchen, so that the players have to walk back and forth between the stations, which is very time consuming is. Some levels pose special challenges for the players, such as B. a kitchen that is separated by a pedestrian crossing, where pedestrians can get in the way of the cooks. On another level, the kitchen is on the loading area of two trucks that drive along a street at different speeds, so it is not always possible to switch from one half of the kitchen to the other. Another kitchen is on top of an iceberg, so players have to make more careful movements so they don't fall off.
There are around 30 levels in the campaign, plus an end boss level. Additional levels can be unlocked by purchasing additional content.
Overcooked is designed as a local cooperative game for up to four players. There is also a competitive multiplayer option where two teams compete against each other in order to collect as many points as possible in a given time. The game also has a single player mode in which the player can control two cooks by switching between them or trying to control both at the same time. The game does not have an online multiplayer mode.
