Shovel Knight is a 2D - side-scroller - video game , that the Californian was developed independent studio Yacht Club Games and published in 2014 after the project through crowdfunding on the platform Kickstarter has been funded. It was first released for Microsoft Windows , Nintendo 3DS and Wii U in June 2014, in September for macOS , in October for Linux and for PlayStation 3 , PlayStation 4 , PlayStation Vita and Xbox One in April 2015. The game was released in March 2017 under the Title Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove as the launch title for the Nintendo Switch .

Gameplay

Shovel Knight is a 2D sidescroller in 8-bit - graphics to that of the Nintendo Entertainment System is like. The player controls the protagonist Shovel Knight while collecting treasure and fighting the knights of the order without mercy .

The aim of the game is to master all levels and collect as many treasures as possible, with which various objects and armor can be acquired. If the pawn is defeated, some of the treasures collected are lost.

The developers at Yacht Club Games took inspiration for the gameplay mechanics of Castlevania , Mega Man and Dark Souls .

Shovel Knight was received positively by a large majority of reviews. The website Metacritic rated the 3DS version of the game at 90% based on 9 ratings, the Wii-U version at 88% based on 24 ratings, and the PC version at 85% based on 46 ratings.

Kotaku listed the game in the ranking "The 22 Best-Reviewed Games That Don't Have Sequels (Yet)" due to the high ratings. Colin Moriarty at IGN Entertainment rated Shovel Knight with 9/10 points and called it "the best game of 2014".

In the first month after its release in North America, Shovel Knight was sold 180,000 times, 49,000 of which were the Wii-U version, 59,000 times the 3DS version and 66,000 times on Steam . More than 300,000 copies had been sold by early December 2014. Over 700,000 copies of the game had been sold by the end of June 2015. In December 2016, Yacht Club Games announced that 1.5 million copies had already been sold.
