Frostpunk is a computer strategy game from 11 Bit Studios . It is a combination of a build-up strategy with a survival simulation that was published for Microsoft Windows on April 24, 2018 and sold over 250,000 times within three days. The game was released for Playstation 4 and Xbox One on October 10, 2019 .

In an alternate timeline in 1886 , blizzards and freezing temperatures broke out that failed to harvest and left millions of people starving . The player leads a group of people who - on the run from the cold and hunger - managed to reach a heat generator.

Gameplay

The player has to ensure that a city is built around the generator that can meet the needs of the population in the cold. In doing so, he has to make morally difficult decisions and research new technologies that are displayed in a technology tree.

Production and publication

The game was first announced in August 2016 and should actually be released in the 3rd quarter of 2017. Instead, the release date was postponed to April 24, 2018. The game was developed by 11 Bit Studios , which are already known for the game This War of Mine .

The production cost more than 10 million PLN (about 2.3 million €), the money was brought back in less than three days in sales. The game was also released on October 10, 2019 for Xbox One and PlayStation 4 . After the successful launch, the studio promised to provide free content updates. This has already happened several times. In one of these updates (1.3.2), among other things, an endless mode was added. In addition, chargeable expansions, which are also included in the Season Pass , should appear until at least summer 2020 .

Frostpunk was largely positively received by the critics ( Metacritic : 84/100 points); However, the lack of long-term motivation was criticized. Among other things, the frosty and gloomy Ice Age - End Times - and Steampunk atmosphere of the game and the game mechanics that tempt you to strategically secure human existence are praised . The mix of management , politics , survival and research and a dynamic society and game world were also positively highlighted . The moral conflicts that the player is confronted with and the consequences with them are also praised by the press. Players who are looking for extensive and sprawling building and expansion options and disputes with other nations are wrong with the game. The limited building space and some inconsistencies and confusion are also criticized. On Steam, the positive user ratings are 89 percent.

The federal agency for the positive rating of computer and console games has issued a recommendation for Frostpunk. From an educational perspective, it was praised, among other things, that the game stimulates reflection on one's own values , uses sustainability as the central game mechanics and deals with current issues (such as climate change , refugees , ...) about the fictional setting .
