Destiny 2 is a multiplayer - computer game , developed by Bungie, Inc. and published by Activision Publishing, Inc. Bungie and Activision were independently year of 2019. The first person shooter is an online-only game and was released for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on September 6, 2017. The version for Microsoft Windows was released on October 24, 2017. On November 19, 2019, Destiny 2 also appeared on Google Stadia . Destiny 2 is the sequel to the 2014 released Destiny .

The game world is embedded in a science fiction scenario. Each player slips into the role of a so-called guardian, protector of the last remaining safe city on earth. For this purpose, this guardian uses a power called “light” to defend the city from various alien races. One of these races, the so-called Cabal, led by "Dominus Ghaul", infiltrate the city and rob the Guardians of their power. The player starts with the journey to regain this power and to defeat Ghaul and his "Red Legion" and to recapture the last city.

As in the first part of the game, the actions of Destiny 2 are divided into player-versus-player ( PvP ) and player-versus-environment ( PvE ) activities . In addition to the classic story missions, in which the plot of the game is followed, Destiny 2 in PvE mode contains so-called “strikes” for groups of three players and “raids” for six players. Here randomly chosen story missions are played in different degrees of difficulty. There are also different events and activities with non-player characters (NPC) on the different planets . So-called competitive modes, which are based on the PvP principle, contain both goal-based types and classic deathmatch .

Story mode plot

A year after the SIVA crisis ended, the Red Legion Cabal launch a full area attack on the final city, destroying the top of the tower. The guardian and his companion, the ghost, presented at the beginning of the game, help the leadership (Commander Zavala, Ikora Rey, Cayde-6 etc.) to evacuate the population. During the attack, the attack ship of the Cabal commander, Dominus Ghaul, attaches a large device to the so-called "traveler" (a mysterious ball floating above the earth that seems inactive) to remove the special element "light". The Guardian also draws his strength from this element. The Guardian loses his power and barely escapes Ghaul. After two days of unconsciousness, the guardian wakes up and locates his companion and the two exits from the city. Then he follows with the help of Suraya Hawthorne, a person who lives outside the city and helps refugees, to the last safe place in the European Death Zone (ETZ), called "the farm".

The guardian follows a vision and encounters a fragment of the “traveler” in a hidden forest in the European death zone. The mind interacts with the piece and restores the power of the light. Through this interaction, the spirit also restores the Guardian's power. After he completes a series of missions for Hawthorne and Devrim Kay, also human, in which long-distance communication is restored, the Guardian receives a call from Commander Zavala, in which the surviving Guardians are called to the Saturn moon Titan to set up a counter-offensive . It turns out that Ghaul has captured the eldest of the Guardians ("the Speaker") and is trying to take advantage of the power of the "Traveler" and to acquire the knowledge of the "Light".

The Guardian travels to the former human colony on the moon Titan. There he learns that the colony has been overrun by the crowd. After completing tasks for Vice Commander Sloane, the colony is restored and the Keeper is tasked by Zavala with gathering information about the Cabal. It turns out that in response to the distress call sent by the Skyburners Regiment two years earlier, the Red Legion was sent to the Milky Way. The Guardian also finds out that Ghaul is so far undefeated and has a super weapon called "Omnipotence," a space station with the ability to destroy entire stars. The star of every living being that resisted the Cabal rules in the system was destroyed. Ghaul, meanwhile, orders the "speaker" to tell him how to communicate with the "traveler". The Guardian simply lets Ghaul know that he is never worthy of the power of light and that the “traveler” would never consider him worthy. Regardless of this, Ghaul refrains from killing the guardian in order to torture him into telling him how to communicate with the "traveler". Commander Zavala orders the Guardian to help Ikora Rey and Cayde-6 launch a counterattack to regain control of the final city.

The Guardian finds Cayde's whereabouts on the planet Nessus, where he is looking for Vex technology to be used against the Red Legion, and Ikora on Jupiter's moon Io, who is looking for answers to the mysterious “traveler”. Back on the farm, the team realizes that the first step in the counterattack must be to destroy the Red Legion's superweapon, to keep it from destroying the solar system if they can't find another way out. The guardian succeeds in killing a cabal officer and thus gaining secret codes for access to one of the ships. With this ship, the keeper has the opportunity to get to the space station of omnipotence and destroy it together with the station. Meanwhile, Ghaul's mentor recommends taking the light. Ghaul resists this advice until his mentor kills the "speaker". Ghaul then takes the light and murders his mentor in a fit of anger.

The Guardian then returns to Earth to assist in the counterattack. After a brief meeting with Cayde, Ikora, Zavala and Hawthorne, they infiltrate the Ghaul command ship and try to save the “traveler”. Ghaul forcibly takes the light, corrupts it and uses its power against the Guardian. But this successfully repels the attack and kills Ghaul. But Ghaul nevertheless appropriates power and transforms himself into a huge form of himself, thus speaking directly to the “traveler”. While he is speaking to the "traveler", the latter wakes up and destroys Ghaul. Through this attack, it sends a massive shock wave across the entire planet and restores the light. The shock wave will also destroy all Red Legion units. The game then ends with a voiceover from the “speaker”, who reminds of the power of light and warns those who are trying to stop or control the power.

Extension Forsaken

The expansion Forsaken , based on the DLC The Curse of Osiris and the War Spirit, is about an awakened man named "Uldren Sov", corrupted by the darkness. He frees the Barons of Mockery from the prison of the ancients in order to be able to use them for his plans. However, the new incarceration does not succeed and Cayde-6 dies at Uldren's hand.

In the Tangled Bay, a planet that was almost completely devastated by asteroids, Uldren gathers the evil Barons around him. These follow the leader of the new enemy race Hohn , Fikrul, which in turn Uldren as a father follows and so appeals to them. The scorn are dead "fallen", which have been brought back to life by corrupted ether. The task the Guardian is now facing is to avenge Cayde-6 by killing Uldren Sov. This part also serves as the background for a raid (not to be equated with dungeons ) in which the guardian has to defeat an ancient creature called "Riven", who tried to destroy the last city with the help of Uldren.

With the Forsaken update, the maximum player level was increased to 50 on the one hand and the power level to 600 on the other. New raids, weapons, armor, cosmetic items, strikes, story missions, planets, people, and competitive mode maps have also been added.

Enhancements Shadowkeep ( fortress of the shadow )

On 1 October 2019, the expansion appeared Shadowkeep (dt. Fortress of Shadows ), which at the same time the 8th Season of Destiny 2 began. This is the first expansion that Bungie has developed independently after separating from Activision. It should serve as the basis for further developments that will last at least until Season 11 at the end of 2020. The deluxe version offers an integrated season pass, but the respective seasons can be purchased separately later. In addition to balance changes, new locations, weapons, objects and additional multiplayer expansions, Shadowkeep also offers a new story chapter that takes place on the moon. An old friend from the first part of Destiny , Eris Morn, is found on the moon again.

Game mechanics

Just like its predecessor, Destiny 2 is a first-person shooter that contains elements known from role-playing games and MMOs . It is essentially a so-called loot shooter . In contrast to the predecessor, which only had communication options with other players assigned by the system (so-called matchmaking ), in Destiny 2 you can communicate with all players in the game world. In addition, the player search system has been expanded in Destiny 2 : The player can use the system called "Guided Games" to search for other players or clans who need additional help with various activities such as raids or strikes. As in the first Destiny , the game types are divided into "player-versus-environment" ( PvE ) and "player-versus-player" ( PvP ).

Character progression and classes

Similar to the predecessor, the player character can be improved through experience points. As soon as a certain number of experience points has been collected, the character rises in the level and thus receives improved values and greater strength in battles. Tasks (so-called "quests"), including the main story, are certain orders that the player receives from computer-controlled units ( NPC ), which award experience points as a reward for completing them. By completing the main tasks, the player progresses in the story of Destiny 2 .

Destiny 2 includes the same three classes as its predecessor. No other classes were added. Each character has their own skills, upgrades, and three subclasses. With these subclasses the player can adapt his playing style. After selecting the class, the player chooses one of three races: Human, Awakened (a kind of successor to humans) or Exo (humanoid machines). Then there is the option to customize the appearance of the character such as skin color or gender. These adjustments have no effect on the game and are purely cosmetic in nature. The player can create up to three characters, so each class can be played at least once.

  • The “Hunter” class includes the “Gunslinger” subclass with the special ability “Golden Gun”, which was already available in the predecessor, and the “Night Stalker” based on the “Void” element from the Destiny expansion The Taken King , with the special ability "Shadowshot" (German: "Schattenschuss"). Both classes have noticeable differences in style of play. The third class of the hunter is the "Arkusakrobat" based on the element "Arkus" with his special ability "Arc Staff" (German: "Arkusstab").
  • The class of the "Warlock" has the subclass of the "Void Runner" from the first part with his special ability "Nova Bomb" (German: "Novabombe"). As with the hunter, the subclass "Storm Summoner" (Element Arkus) with its special ability "Stormtrance" was taken over from the expansion The Taken King . Both classes received several adjustments for Destiny 2 . The new subclass of the Warlocks for Destiny 2 is the “Twilight Blade” based on the element “Solar” with the new special ability “Daybreak”.
  • The "Titan" class contains the subclass "Striker" (element "Arkus") taken over from the first Destiny with its special ability "Fists of Havoc" (German: "Chaos fists") and the class "Sun slayer" taken over from the Destiny expansion (Element “Solar”) with his special ability “Hammer of Sol”. The new sub-class is the void-based "Sentinel" with its new special ability "Sentinel Shield".

After the character has reached the maximum level 50 through experience points, further progress consists in further increasing the power level through equipment. The player has various options for obtaining equipment, for example through raids or in-game events. Each of the three weapon classes and each of the five pieces of armor have their own power level. The character's power level is calculated from the average of these individual levels. The higher the level of the character, the higher the power level of the equipment can be. A higher power level increases the character's attack and defense strength. The highest possible power level with the release is 700. In contrast to the weapon classes used in the original, the weapons in Destiny 2 are divided into the slots kinetic, energy and power weapons. Placing the weapons in one of these existing slots changes their damage potential.

Player versus Environment (PvE)

As in the first Destiny , this type of game is the main focus of the game. There are different explorable zones (e.g. European death zone on earth or Saturn's moon Titan). In Destiny 2 there is also a new social space in the European death zone during the campaign, as the old location known from the predecessor was destroyed at the beginning. There are also patrol missions and public events in Destiny 2 again, but the focus is on exploring the worlds with the different cities and visiting the friendly non-player characters with their side tasks. New in the second part are so-called "adventures", in which the player is sent on treasure-hunt-like missions through the worlds. A map has also been inserted on which the computer-controlled characters are marked. The travel system has been improved so that the character does not have to travel to another location via orbit, but can start his journey directly from his original position. Weekly events can be started in the endgame, in which strong items of equipment await as rewards.

Player versus Player (PvP)

The player-versus-player environment in Destiny 2 offers games in 4-on-4 mode (since Forsaken update 6-on-6 mode) and has been reduced from three game modes to one compared to the first Destiny . A compensation system adjusts different levels of equipment. The player interface shows the availability of special abilities or reinforcements for the opponent. When entering the fast-paced game arena, the player is assigned one of the game variants “conflict”, “control” or “domination”. In the ranked game, the two new game variants are "Countdown" and "Survival". In the best-of-ten-round countdown variant, one team takes turns planting a bomb while the other is supposed to prevent it. If the defending team eliminates every player on the attacking team, the round is over. In the best-of-seven-round survival variant, each team has a certain number of lives. If a player dies and the number of available lives on their team drops to zero, no further players will be revived.

Special rewards can be won by playing and winning PvP modes at the weekly “Trials of the Nine” event. There are additional rewards for winning seven games in a row.

development

A successor to Destiny was first mentioned in November 2014. Two months after the first part was published, Eric Hirshberg, Activision's CEO, said that a successor was already being worked on. Initially, the successor was planned for the release in September 2016, an official confirmation followed on February 11, 2016. The release of the successor to Microsoft Windows was confirmed on March 30, 2017.

Only 4K improvements should be usable for the PlayStation 4 Pro . In contrast to the PC version, the console versions are limited to a maximum of 30 FPS. Destiny 2 also uses a combination of dedicated servers and peer-to-peer network connections.

In order to gain further insight into the history of Destiny 2 , artifacts have been distributed in the virtual game world, which can be scanned by the ghost and contain further information and background stories. At E3 2017, Bungie released a new cinematic trailer that featured the antagonist Dominus Ghaul. In the trailer it became clear that in contrast to the first part, Bungie wanted to focus more on the depth of the story and the characters. In the trailer, the release date for the console version has been moved to September 6, 2017 and for the PC version to October 24, 2017. The early access beta phase began for the PlayStation 4 on July 18, 2017, followed by the Xbox One on July 19, 2017. The official beta phase started on July 21, 2017. publication

Destiny 2 was released worldwide for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on September 6, 2017. The PC version of the game was then released on October 24, 2017. The game is offered in different versions, including a Collector's Edition, a Limited Edition and a Digital Deluxe Edition. As with the first part of the game, a so-called Expansion Pass is offered, with which access to the first two expansions is purchased before they are even released. As with the first Destiny, players will get early access to the game's beta if they have pre-ordered it. There were various bonuses for pre-ordering, such as game items or figures. More figures and toys are to be released after the console version starts. Before the move to Steam, the PC version was made available exclusively via Blizzard's own client Battle.net . Destiny 2 was the first title that was not developed by Blizzard itself and was available in its own shop.

Separation of Activision and Bungie

After the separation of Activision and Bungie, it was announced that Destiny 2 will no longer be offered on Battle.net. Instead, the game has been available on Steam since October 1, 2019. In the course of the online shooter was free-to-play with option to acquire the extensions Forsaken and, also published on October 1, 2019 extension Shadowkeep ( the shadow fortress ).

The first two DLCs "Curse of Osiris" and "War Spirit" were made available free of charge with the base game on all platforms.

By October 1, 2019, PC gamers were informed by Bungie how to transfer their accounts from Battle.net to Steam.

Content after publication

Before the console version was released, Bungie reported that the development studio was already working on more content. Bungie planned to shorten the update cycles compared to the first Destiny . The first expansion for Destiny 2 finally appeared at the end of 2017. The story for "Curse of Osiris" ("Curse of Osiris") is directed to the character of the same name and takes place on the planet Mercury. The second expansion "Warmind" ("War spirit") was published in spring 2018 and tells the story of the war spirit Rasputin on Mars from the first part. A clan feature was also added shortly after the game was released. The banner PvP known from the original was released in October 2017.
