Ghost of Tsushima

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ghost of Tsushima is an action adventure developed by Sucker Punch Productions exclusively for the PlayStation 4 game console . On July 17, 2020, it was released by Sony Interactive Entertainment . The game uses the historical landing of a Mongol invading army on the Japanese island of Tsushima as a background . The player takes on the role of one of the last surviving Japanese samurai, who tries to drive away the invaders with guerrilla tactics contrary to the samurai tradition.

action

Ghost of Tsushima is set on the island of Tsushima, between the Korean peninsula and the Japanese heartland, during the first Mongol invasions of Japan in 1274 . The player character is Jin Sakai, a fictional samurai of the defeated Japanese defense army, whose appearance is based on the actor Daisuke Tsuji and was set to music by him in the English-language original. In order to defeat the Mongolian army under the command of the cunning general Khotun Khan ( Patrick Gallagher ), to free the residents of Tsushima from foreign rule and to prevent the invaders from moving to the main Japanese islands, Jin has to leave the traditional paths of the samurai and join find a new, unconventional fighting style on the path of the spirit.

During his journey through Tsushima, Jin is plagued by remorse and constantly questions whether his actions are right or wrong and what it means to himself to be the protector of the island and its people.

Gameplay

In Ghost of Tsushima , the player controls the character Jin Sakai, who is also known as "The Ghost", in the open-world game from a third-person perspective . In the fight against opponents, the player can use various weapons, such as katana , knife, sticky bomb or a bow and arrow. Depending on the preferred playstyle, frontal attacks as well as stealth attacks are possible, in which Jin creeps through the area and attacks his enemies from behind. If he succeeds in such an assassination , other opponents in the area fall into shock for a while and do not attack. The character's abilities can be expanded and improved as the game progresses. To this end, the player has various samurai skills, such as fighting with weapons and so-called ghost skills, which include alchemy and sneak attacks. A grappling hook should also make it possible to reach areas that are apparently difficult to access. In addition, Jin can swing his way through enemy camps unnoticed with the grappling hook and surprise enemies with a fall attack.

Open game world

Tsushima Island is designed as an open game world in which Jin can move freely. For orientation, however, the player cannot use classic aids such as a compass, a mini-map or waypoints, but has to orientate himself to sights or prominent points in the area. On his way, Jin has to free numerous camps or castles from the Mongol occupation in order to weaken the power of the invaders. With his horse, which the player can name himself, a fast journey into different parts of the game world should be made possible.

companion

In the course of the game, Jin finds companions who support him in his task, for example the masterful archer Masako. However, these are not necessarily loyal comrades in arms. The relationship with the companions is significantly influenced by the decisions made by the player. If a companion character does not agree with the actions, he can turn away from Jin or even become an enemy who attacks him.

development

After completing Infamous: First Light , Sucker Punch Productions wanted to develop another open world game. As a result, the game has no waypoints, so players have complete freedom to explore the world of the game. According to Nate Fox, the game's director, the team redesigned the game's numerous internal pitches while conceptualizing the game into "the fantasy of becoming a samurai." To ensure the title was an accurate representation of feudal , medieval Japan , the team consulted cultural scholars and sent an audio team to Japan to record various sounds, including birdsong . The option of Japanese voice output with English subtitles should also provide additional authenticity. Sucker Punch's Infamous game series served as inspiration for Jin's ways of getting around, such as climbing fences or pulling himself up with a grappling hook. In contrast to Infamous , however, there will be no branches in the story if players use different approaches to a task. The development team was inspired by samurai films , especially works by the Japanese director Akira Kurosawa, as well as comics such as Lone Wolf & Cub or Usagi Yojimbo . The team consulted a historical sword fighting expert with David Ishimaru to create a historically sound, correct fighting style for the game. According to Chris Zimmerman, co-founder of Sucker Punch, fighting should feel like holding a real long sword for the player. In December 2015, Sony CEO Scott Rohde announced that Sucker Punch's new project was in early development. Ghost of Tsushima was revealed during a presentation at Sony Interactive Entertainment's Paris Games Week in October 2017. A gameplay demo was first shown at E3 2018 . The Japanese composer Shigeru Umebayashi was commissioned with the music production .
