Celeste is a 2D - computer game in the genre Jump 'n' Run the Canadian game developer Matt Thorson and Noel Berry. It was released on January 25, 2018 for Linux , macOS , Windows 10 , Xbox One , PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch .

Gameplay

Madeline sprints in the air towards a green crystal that regenerates her sprint ability.

In Celeste , the player plays a young girl named Madeline, who has set herself the task of climbing a mountain. The player has to avoid various deadly objects. To do that, Madeline can jump, do a sprint that hurls her in one of eight directions, cling to walls, and climb them. After one sprint, Madeline has to hit the ground to run another sprint. Some of these basic movements can be combined in order to get around obstacles in an alternative way or get around faster, especially for Speedruns is helpful. However, these special moves are only taught to the player late in the game. Each of the nine “chapters” in Celeste contains new items and properties that fit the region and must be used to climb the mountain, for example moving platforms or wind.

At the beginning of the game, only the A side of Chapter 1 is playable. The other chapters can be unlocked by completing the A-side of the previous chapter. For almost every chapter there is also a more difficult B-side with changed background music, which can be unlocked by collecting a cassette in the respective chapter. Whoever has made all B-sides unlocks the C-sides. These are significantly shorter than the other sides, but require high precision.

In the A-sides, strawberries are also placed in hard-to-reach places, but they have no value in the game. In the first eight chapters, crystal hearts can be collected that open barriers in the individual pages of chapter 8. In the A-sides, the crystal hearts are well hidden and often require solving a small puzzle to get them. In the B and C sides, they are given as a reward at the end of the page.

Celeste is a difficult game. Players can activate a help mode in which the speed of the game can be reduced and restrictions (climbing endurance, number of sprints) can be lifted. In this way, players with physical limitations can adjust the difficulty according to their needs or practice for particularly difficult sections. With the completion of all C-sides a variant mode is activated, with which the game can be made faster, more difficult or more interesting.

action

In the prologue of the game, the protagonist Madeline is introduced, who wants to climb the Celeste Mountain. In doing so, she ignores the warning from an old woman who lives at the foot of the mountain. Madeline climbs through an abandoned city and meets the traveler Theo. At night, she dreams of a dark reflection breaking out of a mirror. It turns out that this reflection is the embodiment of their fears and problems. When she tries to prevent Madeline from climbing, Madeline escapes.

She travels on and finds an old hotel where a ghostly porter tries to persuade her to stay one night. However, the hotel is in a very messy condition. She tries to appease him by tidying up parts of the hotel as the ghostly doorman, known as Mr. Oshiro, is getting more and more intrusive. Then Madeline's reflection emerges, which enables her to escape, but also insults Mr. Oshiro and angered him. He chases Madeline out and she continues her climb.

Theo comforts Madeline in the gondola. Madeline: "I can't breathe."

Madeline later meets Theo at a gondola. The reflection reappears on the gondola and stops the gondola in the middle of the route, which triggers a panic attack in Madeline. Theo calms them down and they drive on and arrive at an ancient temple.

In the temple they both lose each other and are trapped in a mirror. Theo is trapped in a magical crystal and monsters that arise from Madeline's insecurities hunt her. Ultimately, she finds Theo and frees him from the crystal.

After escaping the temple, they make camp. Madeline tells Theo about her mental health problems before they rest. During the night, she tries to reach her reflection to tell her that she wants to leave her behind. The reflection is furious about this and Madeline falls down to the base of the mountain. Trapped in a cave, she meets the old woman from the beginning of the game. She suggests that she should talk to the reflection rather than leave it, because it might be scared.

Looking for her reflection, Madeline apologizes for repelling her and suggests that we climb the mountain together. The reflection starts out, but then calms down and forgives her. The reflection and Madeline merge and together climb the mountain and reach the top.

A year later, the old lady calls Madeline and invites her to explore a newly discovered cave that leads to the core of the mountain.

The old woman died in the last chapter. However, Madeline was unable to attend her funeral due to a mental breakdown caused by the news. Back on the mountain, she follows a bird that she had met on her previous trip. She firmly believes that he is part of the old woman, just as reflection is part of her. She hopes that with the help of the bird she can bring the old woman back.

Her reflection advises against it and leaves Madeline on the moon. Madeline eventually admits to her denial and guilt and accepts that the entire retrieval operation is just a dream. However, she decides to free the bird from the dream before waking up and getting on with her life.

At the end of her dream, Madeline finally meets a dream version of the old woman and finally comes to terms with her death. Madeline wakes up in the real world and talks to Theo, who has repeatedly tried to contact her. Theo comforts her and sends her an old photo of his grandfather and a younger version of the old woman together in front of the mountain. So the two of them, just like him and Madeline, had previously climbed the mountain together.
