Atlus ( Japanese ア ト ラ ス , Atorasu ) is a Japanese publisher for computer games . Until 2010 Atlus was an independent company called KK Atlus ( 株式会社 ア ト ラ ス , Kabushiki-gaisha Atorasu , English Atlus Co., Ltd. ), now it is a label for computer games of the company KK Index (English Index Corporation ). Atlus is particularly known for the tactical role-playing game Tactics Ogre and the role-playing game series Megami Tensei .

Atlus was founded on April 7, 1986. In July 1995, Atlus and Sega launched the first Purikura machines on the market. In April 1997 the foreign subsidiary Atlus Entertainment Pte Ltd was founded in Singapore and in March 1999 Atlus USA, Inc. was founded in the United States . In July 2000, Atlus entered into a capital and business relationship with Kadokawa Shoten . In January 2005, Shanghai Atlus Digital Eizō Yūgenkōshi (Japanese) / Shanghai Atlus Digital Yingxiang Youxiangongsi (Chinese) ( 上海 ア ト ラ ス デ ジ タ ル 影像 有限公司 , English Atlus Shanghai Digital Image Co., Ltd. ) and im March in Tianjin , the Atlus (Tianjin) Denshi Yūgenkōshi (Jap.) / Atlus (Tianjin) Dianzi Youxiangongsi ((Ch.) アトラス(天津)電子有限公司 , eng. , Ltd. Atlus (Tianjin) Electronics Co. ) was founded. In the same month Atlus entered into a capital and business relationship with the toy manufacturer Takara Tomy , became its subsidiary in October and took over its computer games division in January 2004. The company began selling slot machines in March 2006, but stopped selling them in September 2007.

On October 30, 2006, KK Index Holdings decided to buy the majority of shares in Atlus, whereby Atlus became a subsidiary of the holding on November 29, 2006. In May 2010 Atlus became a 100% subsidiary of KK Index Holdings. In July 2009, Atlus announced a loss of 2.397 billion yen (€ 17.7 million) for the past fiscal year on a 17.4% decline in sales, compared to a profit of 587 million yen (€ 3.47 million) ) last year.

On August 30, 2010, KK Index Holdings announced that it would merge its two subsidiaries, KK Index (mobile phone applications) and KK Atlus, effective October 1. The KK Index Holdings then changed its name to KK Index on December 1, 2010. On September 18, 2013, the games division - including Atlus - was taken over from Index by Sega with effect from November 1, 2013 and transferred to the newly founded subsidiary KK Sega Dream .
