Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga , or DDS for short, is the title of a computer role-playing game by the Japanese developer studio Atlus , which was released in Europe on July 21, 2006 on the PlayStation 2 . It is the first part of the two-part Digital Devil Saga , which is an offshoot of the Shin Megami Tensei series. It was first published on July 15, 2004 in Japan under the title Digital Devil Saga: Avatar Tuner ( Japanese DIGITAL DEVIL SAGA ア バ タ ー ル ・ チ ュ ー ナ ー , ~: Abatāru Chūnā ). In Europe, the game was only released in English.
action
The entire plot of DDS takes place in the Junkyard (English for "garbage dump"), a post-apocalyptic world in which it rains permanently. This is divided into seven regions that are named after chakras . Six of the Regions are controlled by a respective stem, the Embryon, Vanguard (Jap. アサインメンツ , Asainmentsu = Assignments ), brut ( ブルーティッシュ , Burūtisshu = Brutish ) Solids, Maribel and Wolves ( ハウンズ , Haunzu = hounds ). These are in an ongoing war for supremacy, as the wiping out of the other five tribes is said to lead to ascension into nirvana . In the central region of the Junkyard stands the Karma Temple, which represents the legislative authority and through which the victorious tribe is supposed to achieve Nirvana.
The main characters are Serph, the leader of the Embryon, and his comrades Heat, Argilla, Gale and Cielo. At the beginning of the game, an egg-shaped object arrives in the junkyard, which gives all residents supernatural powers through so-called Atma . However, these also force them to devour other people, whereby no distinction is made between friend and foe. At the same time, Sera appears, a girl who differs from the other residents of the junkyard by the color of her hair and eyes and her soothing song.
Characters
- Serph ( サ ー フ , Sāfu )
- Silent leader of the Embroyn. He uses a handgun and has the powers of the god Varna (actually Varuna ) who rules the water.
- Sera ( セ ラ )
- Mysterious, black-haired girl. She has lost her memories, but has the gift of soothing demons with her song.
- Heat ( ヒ ー ト , Hīto )
- Connected to Serph through deep loyalty, but also rivalry. His weapon is a grenade launcher. His atma is Agni , god of fire, who stands for raw anger, but also intelligence.
- Argilla ( ア ル ジ ラ , Arujira )
- At first, she sympathetically refuses to devour other people. She's the Embryo's best sniper. Prithivi , the quick and nimble goddess of the earth, is her atma
- Gale ( ゲ イ ル , Geiru )
- The calculating cool strategist. He prefers an assault rifle in combat. He was given the powers of Vayu , the god of strength and wind.
- Cielo ( シ エ ロ , Shiero )
- The light-hearted optimist. He uses a machine gun. In contrast to the others, he feels balanced when his Atma, Dyaus , who stands for flying and electricity, wakes up.
Gameplay
As is typical for many role-playing games, DDS is played from a third-person perspective . The possibility of interacting with the environment is indicated by the lighting up of a window in the middle of the screen in which the X symbol of the DualShock 2 controller and the available action appear. The respective action is carried out by pressing the X button.
As in many games of the genre , the own character does not speak, however, in the course of the plot there is always the possibility to answer questions from comrades with given options. The selected answers have an influence on the further course of the game and, when the game is imported, also on the course of the second part of the series.
Battles with normal opponents are initiated randomly as long as you are moving in hostile terrain. Only three of the normally five group members take part in the fight itself, but they can be exchanged at any time.
