ISBN group number

The group number is part of the International Standard Book Number ( ISBN ). The group number is the second component of the ISBN (after the prefix 978 or 979) and identifies the language area , a state or a geographic region. The third part of the ISBN is the publisher's number . The group numbers are set by the International ISBN Agency based in London .

Length of the group number

The group number has one to five digits and is structured in the following number ranges :

This shows that the number range with the first digits 650–699 has not yet been assigned.

Swiss publishers use 2 (French), 3 (German) or 88 (Italian) depending on the language.
