Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle is a computer game published by Ubisoft for the Nintendo Switch . It was developed by the in-house development studio Ubisoft Paris . The crossover of the Rabbids created by Ubisoft and the Super Mario universe created by Nintendo is a turn-based strategy game .

action

In a time-traveling washing machine, the Rabbids appear in the room of a young inventor who is also a big fan of Nintendo's Super Mario games. She left her room for a short time because one of her inventions dropped the fuse, which she now wants to switch on again. Only her robot friend "Beep-0" remains behind. When the Rabbids show up, they start wearing glasses that can combine two objects into one, an invention by the unnamed young inventor of randomly combining things from the room. As a result, some Rabbids are dressed in the clothes of the inhabitants of the “ Mushroom Kingdom ”, in which the Rabbids now also travel with the washing machine. Beep-0 is pulled along. The rabbid who wears the glasses is combined with them himself. With their arrival they cause a lot of chaos, which the player, in the role of Beep-0, Mario, and some other characters from the Mushroom Kingdom or their Rabbid versions, has to eliminate. Initially wreaking havoc at random, the Rabbid, combined with the glasses, is abused by Bowser Jr. and later by Bowser for their evil purposes.

Gameplay

In fights

The battles are the main focus of the game, in which you will spend the majority of the time. The combat system is based strongly on that of the X-COM series, so you drag your three selected characters across the field and can perform three different actions with them, some of which have to recharge over a few rounds after being executed. These would be an attack with a primary weapon, an attack with a secondary weapon and a third, defensive action. Each character has a different focus, for example Mario himself is a very average character, Rabbidpeach in comparison takes the position of a healer.

In the rest of the game

Otherwise you control Beep-0 in freely accessible worlds, which some of the characters - which you unlock in the course of the story - follow. With it you solve some simple puzzles, for the solution of which you unlock collectibles, some of which do not directly influence the game, but are only pieces of music or early drafts, which you can listen to or see in the game in a kind of museum.

production

The game was created on the idea of the creative director, Davide Soliani . He had been a big fan of Nintendo since childhood, which is why he had tried several times to get a collaboration between Nintendo and Ubisoft. When he was given the task of developing a game that would revive the Rabbids series, he was promised to cooperate with Nintendo if the idea was good enough. After picking the idea, the management of Ubisoft gave up the cooperation with Nintendo. Then they created a prototype , which Soliani presented at Nintendo. The idea caught on, even with Mario's creator, Shigeru Miyamoto . Then the development began. The game was announced at E3 2017 and released on August 29, 2017.

For the music the composer Grant Kirkhope was hired, who was previously known with games like Banjo-Kazooie and Donkey Kong 64 .

reception

The game was generally well received. Many reviewers were surprised that the two game IPs worked so well as a crossover.

Mirco Kügel from GamePro wrote:

“Excellent Mario Rabbids crossover with beautiful worlds, a deep character system and strategic battles. A switch must-have. "
