life and career

Hutzel was born in Ann Arbor , Michigan in 1955 . He studied mechanical engineering at the University of Michigan , but dropped out to move to California to gain a foothold in the film business. Hutzel initially worked as a driver for a production company and decided to specialize in special effects .

In 1985 he was camera assistant responsible for the effects in the fantasy film Teenwolf . This was followed by orders for the 1980s reissue of Twilight Zone and from 1986 for Raumschiff Enterprise - The Next Century . After five seasons he left Starship Enterprise to work for their spin-off Star Trek: Deep Space Nine from 1992 , to which he remained loyal for seven seasons until the end of the series.

For Star Trek , Hutzel created, among other things, the design of the Borg spaceships and the USS Defiant, which was introduced in Deep Space Nine . In 1996 he was also responsible for the assembly of the award-winning Deep Space Nine episode Always the Load with the Tribbles ( Season 5 ), in which the actors from Deep Space Nine digitally in scenes from the episode Do you know Tribbles? of the series Spaceship Enterprise ( Season 2 ) were installed. Together with Terry J. Erdmann and Paula M. Block, he wrote the book The Magic of Tribbles: The Making of Star Trek Deep Space Nine - “Trials and Tribbles ations” about the lavish production of this episode . For a long time, Hutzel preferred conventional special effects over the increasingly emerging digitally produced visual effects .

After Deep Space Nine ended , Hutzel worked for the science fiction film Red Planet and the Spy Kids film series. Ronald D. Moore , with whom Hutzel had worked on Deep Space Nine , hired him in 2004 for Battlestar Galactica , the remake of the 1970s television series Kampfstern Galactica (original title: Battlestar Galactica ). From 2013 he was responsible for the effects of the Defiance series .

For his work on special effects and visual effects, he was nominated nine times for an Emmy for his work in the Star Trek franchise alone , and he won it twice. For Battlestar Galactica , he was nominated seven times and awarded twice. In total, he received more than 20 nominations in the course of his career.
