Niantic, Inc. is a US-based development studio for computer games based in San Francisco , California . The company was founded in 2010 by John Hanke under the name Niantic Labs as an internal startup at Google , before it split from Google in 2015 and appeared as an independent company.

Niantic was the development of augmented reality - mobile games as Ingress , Pokémon Go and Harry Potter Wizards Unite known.

history

Niantic released its first product in 2012 with the Field Trip mobile app , a Locative Media application . With Ingress in November of the same year the first mobile phone game as followed invite-only app for Android . The application was opened to a wider audience in October 2013 and an iOS version was released in July 2014.

Pokémon Go

Originally, Niantic took alternative approaches to funding its projects and tried to distance itself from ads and in-app purchases. With the separation from Google in September 2015, however, in-app purchases were also implemented in Ingress . At the same time, Niantic announced a collaboration with Nintendo and The Pokémon Company to develop Pokémon Go for iOS and Android. In October 2015, the company announced that Google, Nintendo, and The Pokémon Company would be investing a total of $ 30 million in the project. In February 2016 it was announced that an additional five million US dollars would be invested in the development of the app.

On July 6, 2016, Pokémon Go was finally available for download in Australia, New Zealand, and the United States from the App Store and Google Play Store . A nationwide publication in Europe was planned, but was postponed because the original publication already led to server overloads. Germany was the first European country in which customers were given access to the app on July 13, 2016. The publication in the UK followed a day later.

Harry Potter: Wizards Unite

In November 2017 it was announced that Niantic is developing Harry Potter: Wizards Unite   in partnership with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and WB Games San Francisco under the Portkey Games label.

The mobile AR game, inspired by JK Rowling's Wizarding World and Harry Potter , aims to enable players to explore real-world neighborhoods and cities to discover mysterious artifacts, learn to cast spells and encounter legendary beasts and iconic characters . The game bears a strong resemblance to Pokémon Go .

The game was released as an Open Beta on April 16, 2019 in New Zealand. Beta testing in Australia began on May 1, 2019.

Harry Potter: Wizards Unite was released in the US and UK on June 20, 2019.
