Locative media or locative media is a generic term for digital media with reference to the real location with the help of technologies for location determination (e.g. global positioning system ) and mobile devices such as mobile phones , laptops or smartphones .

The term was coined by Karlis Kalnins. Locative Media is directly related to Augmented Reality / AR (overlaying the field of vision with computer-generated graphics) and Pervasive Computing (the penetration of everyday life with computers). While AR delivers technical solutions and pervasive computing is interested in embedding computers, Locative Media focuses on social interactions with places and corresponding technical devices.

An example from science fiction literature is provided by William Gibson's Spooky Country ( source code ) from 2007. The concept of locative media is a main theme here.
