Lee "Faker" Sang-hyeok ( kor.  이상혁 ; born May 7, 1996 in Seoul ) is a professional South Korean e-sportsman in the computer game League of Legends . He has played for the SK Telecom T1 team in the midlane position since 2013 and is considered the most successful League of Legends player.

In the course of his career, he has won the World Cup three times and over $ 1.2 million in prize money. He also won the silver medal at the 2018 Asian Games with the South Korean national team .

background

League of Legends is a PC game from the MOBA genre, released in 2009 , that is played in a five-on-five mode. After it appeared in South Korea in 2011, it quickly became very popular there; similar to StarCraft: Brood War about a decade earlier . At the beginning of 2012 the tournament series OGN Champions , which was broadcast on the channel OnGameNet , started , in which total prize money in the six-digit euro range is distributed for two to three seasons per year.

SK Telecom T1 - the factory team of Korean telecommunications provider SK Telecom - signed their first League of Legends team in December 2012. Two months later, a second team with Lee "Faker" Sang-hyeok was committed to the midlane position, which from then on went under the name SK Telecom T1 2 . Before that, Faker was not part of a professional team.

Both teams from SKT T1 qualified for the spring season 2013 of OGN-Champions, whereby the second team around Faker with the third place did better than the main team and won prize money equivalent to around 16,500 euros. A little later, SKT1 2 became the new main team of SK Telecom T1. In the following summer season, Faker's team was able to win the tournament and € 54,000 in prize money, with Faker being honored as the best midlane and best player of the tournament, which together brought him an additional personal prize money of the equivalent of almost 8,000 euros.

In the fall, the team was also able to take part in the Riot Season 3 World Championship , with a total prize money of a little more than two million US dollars, the second highest-value e-sports tournament of all time, and started as one of the favorites. The team led by Faker succeeded in reaching the final, where the Chinese team to Royal Club Huang met. In the sold-out Staples Center and in front of millions of live stream viewers , SKT1 clearly won 3-0 and thus the main prize of one million dollars.

At the end of 2013 Faker received numerous awards as the best LoL player of the year; the portal onGamers.com even named him the best e-athlete of 2013.

In the 2013/14 OGN winter season, the team, now starting under the name SKT T1 K , continued its winning streak and won the tournament without losing a map (15: 0). The final opponent was the Samsung Galaxy Ozone team . Again, Faker won the Most Valuable Player (MVP) and Best Midlaner awards.

In the subsequent OGN season in spring 2014, the team barely survived the group stage and was eliminated 3-1 in the quarter-finals against Samsung Galaxy Ozone . In the OGN summer 2014, SK Telecom T1 failed again against the team, which has since been renamed Samsung Galaxy White, with a 3-1 defeat in the quarter-finals. As fourth-placed team in the Korean qualification, the team missed the qualification for the 2014 World Cup.

At the beginning of 2015, SK Telecom T1 showed itself to be in better shape again with a different line-up and won the OGN spring season. In the final, however, Faker was not used. In the subsequent Mid-Season Invitational, the team lost 2: 3 to the Chinese champions EDward Gaming in the final. SK Telecom T1 won the summer season of the South Korean professional league again, this time with a 3-0 final victory over KT Rolster . Faker was honored with the MVP title for the third time in his career. At the World Championship , SK Telecom T1 reached the final with Faker without losing a map, where the team won 3-1 against the KOO Tigers in the Mercedes-Benz Arena Berlin .

At the Riot World Championship 2017 Faker reached the final and lost with his team SK Telecom T1 0: 3 against Samsung Galaxy. While he could not qualify for the World Cup in his own country with SKT T1 in 2018, he returned again in 2019. He and his team reached the semi-finals of the 2019 World Championships, but had to admit defeat to the European G2 Esports , as they did at the Mid-Season Invitational that same year .

Play style

Commentators highlight Faker's large pool of champions in particular . In League of Legends, all players choose one of over 148 champions with individual skills and attributes before the game, which they then control in the game. While some professional players only have a few champions at the highest level or prefer a certain style of play, Faker plays variably and can adapt well to the opponents or the game situation.

In addition, he is considered a player without significant weaknesses in the areas that are important for the game such as map overview, team fights, laning phase and farms.
