G2 Esports is an esports organization based in Berlin . It was founded in February 2014 under the name Gamers2 and has had its current name since October 15, 2015. G2 became known for its involvement in League of Legends , but has also had players in other disciplines such as Counter-Strike: Global Offensive or Rocket League since 2015 . The League of Legends team has played in the League of Legends Championship Series since 2016 .

League of Legends

After Carlos “ocelote” Rodríguez left SK Gaming in autumn 2013, the Spaniard built up his own team in November 2013. Even before the organization was officially founded on February 24, 2014, this lineup team represented Dignitas due to entry problems at the Intel Extreme Masters in São Paulo and was only eliminated in the semi-finals. In the summer of 2014, Gamers2 took part in the EU Challenger Series and achieved two third places there. However , the team missed qualifying for the League of Legends Championship Series . Changes in the lineup followed; Rodríguez ended his career as a player. In order to be able to participate in the EU Challenger Series in 2015 , G2 signed the lineup of Team Nevo . After further changes in September 2015, the team succeeded in qualifying for the spring season of the LCS 2016 - among other things by signing the Croatian Luka "PerkZ" Perkovic on the midlane.

At the turn of the year 2015/16, the organization, which had meanwhile been renamed G2 Esports, signed the two South Koreans Kim “Emperor” Jin-hyun and Kim “Trick” Gang-yun. Right in their first season in the LCS, G2 Esports took first place in the regular season and on the playoffs. The team qualified for the Mid-Season Invitational 2016, but finished in a disappointing fifth place. For the summer split, Kim “Emperor” Jin-hyun and Glenn “Hybrid” Doornenbal were replaced by the former bot lane of Origen with Jesper “Zven” Svenningsen and Alfonso “mithy” Aguirre Rodriguez. At the beginning of the summer split, Ki "Expect" Dae-han was signed as a replacement for the top laner. After he was allowed to play "Kikis" Szkudlarek instead of Mateusz in the second week, Szkudlarek left the team. After a strong regular season, the team around manager Carlos “ocelote” Rodríguez won the Summer Split 2016 with a 3-1 win over Splyce . As a result, G2 Esports was the first to qualify for the 2016 World Cup in North America. Due to a disappointing group phase, which ended in 4th and last place, the team was eliminated before the knockout phase.

In 2017 the team won both the Spring Split and the Summer Split of the LCS and was only defeated by SK Telecom T1 in the Mid-Season Invitational . The team also qualified for the World Cup, but was eliminated in the group stage. With regard to the spring split of the LCS 2018, the team was rebuilt with the exception of Luka "PerkZ" Perkovic. Martin "Wunder" Hansen was signed on the top lane, Marcin "Jankos" Jankowski in the jungle, Petter "Hjarnan" Freyuss and Kim "Wadid" Bae-in formed the new botlane. In the spring split, the team reached 2nd place after only being defeated by Fnatic . In the summer split, the team was unable to build on the previous split and only ended up in 4th place, but was able to qualify for the "play-in" phase of the 2018 World Cup in South Korea. At the 2018 World Cup, the team managed to defeat the then tournament favorites Royal Never Give Up from China in the quarter-finals, but lost to Invictus Gaming in the semi-finals . The line-up was adapted for the spring split of the newly marketed European League League of Legends European Championship (LEC) 2019. Luka "PerkZ" Perkovic took over the position of AD-Carry. In his former position (midlane) Rasmus "Caps" Winther was signed up and Michael "Mikyx" Mehle was appointed to the support position. The team then dominated the spring split and won against Origen 3-0. It was one of the strongest teams in 2019 and was able to prove itself internationally in the following Mid-Season Invitational and won the final 3-0 against the North American team Liquid , after beating record world champion SK Telecom T1 3-1 in the semifinals. G2 was also able to beat the South Korean SKT T1 in the semi-finals of the League of Legends World Championship 2019 . The final was clearly lost against the Chinese team from FunPlus Phoenix.

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive

G2 first appeared after signing the former Polish players from ESC Gaming in early 2015. However, the team could not establish itself at the top of the world and was fired again. With the takeover of the players from Team Kinguin in September 2015, G2 managed a much more successful second attempt to establish itself in CS: GO. This lineup reached the semifinals at DreamHack Cluj-Napoca 2015 and at IEM X - San Jose. After Dennis "dennis" Edman was sold to fnatic in November 2015 , G2 Esports gave the lineup to FaZe Clan in January 2016 . On February 1, 2016, G2 signed a new team with the former players from Titan eSports . The team achieved second place in the offline finals of the ESL Pro League Season 3 in May 2016 . On February 3, 2017, G2 restructured the CS: GO team. While Cédric "RpK" Guipouy and Adil "ScreaM" Benrlitom left the team, G2 signed the three players Nathan "NBK" Schmitt , Dan "apEX" Madesclaire and Kenny "kennyS" Schrub from Team EnVyUs . Edouard "SmithZz" Dubourdeaux took over the coaching position. On September 30, 2019, G2 officially announced that Richard “shox” Papillon would leave the team and join Team Vitality, and Lucas “Lucky” Chastang was put on the bench. Nemanja "nexa" Isaković and Nemanja "huNter" Kovać , previously members of the "Cr4zy" team, have been part of the G2 line-up since then. Despite the change, G2 was unable to report any major successes at the following tournaments, so that the team was in 14th place in the world rankings in December 2019.
