The MLG Major Championship: Columbus 2016 (in short: MLG Columbus 2016 ) was a major tournament in the e-sports - discipline Counter-Strike: Global Offensive , which from March 29 to April 3, 2016 in the MLG Arena and Nationwide Arena in Columbus . The event was played for $ 1 million . Luminosity Gaming won the tournament .

It was the first major on the American continent.

qualification

The eight challenger teams of the MLG Columbus 2016 will be determined via the offline qualifier which will take place from February 26th to 28th, 2016 in the MLG Arena in Columbus . The field of participants in the qualification tournament consists of the eight teams eliminated in the group phase at DreamHack Cluj-Napoca 2015 and eight other teams who can get a ticket for the offline via the minor tournaments newly introduced by the Valve Corporation or via last-chance tournaments -Oualifier earned.

  • The winners of each event as well as the finalist of the Asian minor IEM X - Taipei qualify for the offline qualifier. The prize money of each tournament is 50,000 US dollars .

    Offline qualifier

    The players of the Mongolian team The MongolZ did not get a visa for the United States and had to cancel their participation. They were replaced by the second of the American minor Splyce . The 16 participants in the offline qualifier were divided into four groups. The two best teams in each group qualify for the finals.

    Maps

    During the tournament, the teams have seven maps to choose from, which can be played. In the best-of-one mode, both teams take turns painting a map until two cards remain. From these two maps, the map that is ultimately played is selected at random. In the best-of-three mode, both teams will initially delete one map each. Then each side chooses a map, both of which are played in the first two matches. A possible decision map is chosen at random from among the three remaining maps.

    The favorites Luminosity Gaming and Ninjas in Pajamas prevailed in Group A. The former team was able to win against mousesports and the ninjas in pajamas.

    Defending champion EnVyUs was eliminated as the bottom of the group against the lineup of Gambit Gaming . Gambit missed the playoffs due to the subsequent loss to Counter Logic Gaming , who reached the final round as second in the group.

    Group D

    After a 16: 9 success on de_train against Cloud 9 in the game for group victory, Natus Vincere met Virtus.pro , who previously sent G2 Esports to the lower bracket with a runaway win .     Virtus.pro reached the playoffs as group runner-up after another win against G2 Esports in the best-of-three .

    Final round

    MLG Columbus 2016 winner trophy

    In the final round, all group winners prevailed against their opponents in the quarter-finals. In the first semifinals, Natus Vincere met Astralis . The game on the first map de_inferno was very even. The decisive contribution to the 16:14 map win was made by Ioann "Edward" Sucharjew with 32 kills. The second map de_dust2 dominated NaVi for long stretches and was the first team to reach the final with 2-0. The two cards of the second semi-final between the American teams Team Liquid and Luminosity Gaming both had to be decided in extra time. Both on the first map de_mirage and on the second map de_cache, Team Liquid achieved their 15th round win early on, which guaranteed them extension. However, the Americans did not manage to win the decisive 16th round on both maps. Luminosity Gaming was finally able to win on both maps in overtime.

    In the run-up to the final, MLG organized an all-star match. A team with in European players played in a show match on de_nuke against a team based in America. The teams were composed of different teams. The European team played with Nikola "NiKo" Kovač, Christopher "GeT_RiGhT" Alesund , Mikail "Maikelele" Bill , Håvard "rain" Nygaard and Kenny "kennyS" Schrub ; the American team consisted of Tarik "TaRiK" Celik, Mike "shroud" Grzesiek , Tyler "Skadoodle" Latham , Oleksandr "s1mple" Kostyliev and Spencer "Hiko" Martin . With 22:19 in extra time, the American team won the match.

    Natus Vincere was able to win the first rounds in the final on the first Map de_mirage. Especially the performances of the later MVP of the tournament Marcelo "coldz" David led to a comeback of LG, who won the first map in overtime with 19:17. On the second wish map from Luminosity de_overpass, the Brazilians demonstrated their superiority on this map. The team finished the game after only 18 rounds and thus secured victory in the final. Luminosity Gaming is the first major winner from America.
