Eleague Major: Atlanta 2017

The PGL Major: Kraków 2017 (short: PGL Kraków 2017 ) was the eleventh major tournament in the e-sports discipline Counter-Strike: Global Offensive . The tournament took place from 16 to 23 July 2017 Polish Krakow place. The knockout phase was held in the Tauron Arena Kraków . The team Gambit Gaming , consisting mostly of Kazakh players, won the final against the Brazilian Challenger team Immortals .

Krakow was the second Polish city after Katowice to host a major tournament.

qualification

The eight challenger teams of the PGL Major: Kraków 2017 were determined via an offline qualifier. The field of participants in the qualifying tournament consists of the remaining seven teams eliminated in the Eleague Major: Atlanta 2017 group phase and nine other teams who will earn a ticket for the offline qualifier through the four minor tournaments .

Open qualifier

Every team can register for the Open Qualifier. The American Open Qualifier is divided into South and North America. Places 1-8 in the North American Open Qualifier qualify for the Closed Qualifier, while only 1st place in the South American Open Qualifier qualifies directly for the American minor.

For Europe there are four Open Qualifiers, where the first two places qualify for the Closed Qualifier, in the CIS Open Qualifier places 1-4 qualify.

In the Asian area there are five Open Qualifiers (China, East Asia, Middle East, Oceania and India & Southeast Asia). For the latter tournament you get directly to the Asian minor when you reach places 1 and 2. In the other four Open Qualifiers, this is only achieved by first place.

Closed qualifier

The teams qualified from the respective Open Qualifiers play in the Closed Qualifier for the shortlist for the minor tournaments, except in the regions of South America and Asia. For the European and CIS tournaments, places 1-8 are sufficient for entry into the respective minor tournament; in the North American Closed Qualifier, places 1-5 make it through. There is no Closed Qualifier for Asia, the teams qualify from the Open Qualifier directly to the Asian Minor. Teams were also invited directly to all closed qualifiers.

Minor tournaments

In the run-up to the offline qualifier, four minor tournaments were held in the regions of Europe , the Commonwealth of Independent States , America and Asia :

The tournament started with the game between the Kazakh team Gambit Gaming and mousesports on Inferno. After a 5-0 lead by mousesports on their CT side, the Kazakhs won six consecutive rounds, and then passed another three rounds to the mice by half time. After the break, the game was more one-sided. Mousesports only recorded two round wins. The game ended at 16:10. In the second game between fnatic and FlipSid3 Tactics on Mirage, FlipSid3 won eight of the first eleven rounds as a terrorist, including a 1-on-4 duel by Russian Denis "electronic" Sharipov in the eleventh round. FlipSid3 lost the subsequent round of savings from fnatic and did not win another round until the break. FlipSid3 Tactics was unable to match the performance of the first half on the CT side. The quintet, mostly from Ukraine and Russia, lost the game by 12:16. The Polish quintet Virtus.pro , which was eliminated as early as possible two weeks before the start of the tournament at ESL One Cologne 2017 , convinced in the third game against the Russian team Vega Squadron, which took part in a major for the first time. On the CT-heavy map Nuke, VP reached 13 rounds as a terrorist and did not give up another round in halftime 2. The game represented the highest victory in the entire preliminary round. In Match 4, SK Gaming started with ten round wins as a counter-terrorist on Inferno against Penta Sports. The Brazilians weakened in the middle of the game and were 11:13 behind after the break. In the final sprint, SK won the remaining five rounds and prevented a defeat. The German team BIG competed against the FaZe Clan in their fifth game. Starting on the T-side, the first half on Inferno offered variety and ended 8: 7. After changing sides, BIG gave away only one round and won confidently against the quarter-finalists of the previous major. The only North American representative, Cloud 9, met North on the Map Mirage in the sixth game of round 1. The Danish e-sports team at FC Copenhagen kept the game up until the last third of the game. However, the Danes gave the final laps to Cloud 9. The North Americans won 16:12. In the seventh game between the players from the Ukrainian organization Natus Vincere and the French quintet from G2 Esports, the full 30 rounds were required for a decision on Overpass for the first time. In a game in which the counter-terrorists won a large part of the rounds, Na'Vi went 12-3 out of half-time. The French caught up two at half time, surrendered only two laps to Natus Vincere and with a 16:14 win put themselves in a good starting position for the following days. In the final eighth game of the first day, defending champions Astralis and the Brazilian rookie team Immortals played their first game. Immortals fought their way back on Overpass after a temporary 0: 5 and later 6:12 deficit and forced extra time against the defending champion. There the Brazilians had to give up a CT round after a triple kill Peter "dupreeh" Rasmussen , which they themselves could not win after the break in extra time. Astralis won the game 19:17.

The games of July 17th started with the games of the teams without a win. The representatives of the German organization Penta Sports won seven of the first eight rounds as terrorists against North in the first game on Mirage. The Danes then found their way back into the game and gave up only two rounds by the end of the game and thus decided the game for themselves. Mousesports and FaZe Clan played the second game of the previous day's defeated teams on Train. After mousesports had lost the pistol round as a terrorist and the two savings rounds that followed, the mouses won seven rounds in a row. After a triple kill by Nikola "NiKo" Kovač , FaZe found their way back into the game and after 30 rounds they achieved a 15:15. In extra time, mousesports won all rounds and celebrated its only victory on the major. The game of the CIS participants FlipSid3 Tactics and Natus Vincere was played on Train like the previous match. Despite winning both pistol rounds, FlipSid3 could not withstand the strength of the opponent. Natus Vincere won 16: 9. The fourth game of round 2 between the Immortals and Vega Squadron was one-sided on Train. After winning the pistol round as a defender, Vega could not survive the Brazilians' savings round. As a result of a tactical break on the part of Vega when the score was 9: 3 for Immortals, Vega won two more rounds by half time. In the second half the picture of the first 15 rounds was confirmed. Vega could only win one lap and was beaten 6:16. The fifth game between BIG and Cloud 9 on Inferno got off to a good start for BIG. The team was able to get twelve rounds in their first half as a terrorist. The bright spot for the North Americans was Tyler “Skadoodle” Latham's kill four in the fourteenth round. Cloud 9 won the first three rounds of the second half. Subsequently, internet problems delayed the game, which could only be solved after the end of the game. The game ended without a viewer broadcast. BIG gave another five rounds to the North Americans before the German lineup won the game 16:11. The two organizations Gambit Gaming and G2 Esports, which were already victorious in the first round, faced each other in the sixth game on Cache. After a 10-5 half-time lead, the Kazakhs from Gambit expanded their dominance after the break and won with 16: 6. Gambit was particularly convincing with the performance of Kazakh Dauren “AdreN” Kystaubayev , who landed 25 kills in the game. In the seventh match of the day, Astralis and SK Gaming faced the winners of the two previous major tournaments on Inferno. In the one-sided game, SK took an 8-1 lead, only to surrender two more rounds to Astralis by half time. The model of Marcelo "coldzera" David recorded 23 frags in this half and died only three times. Astralis still won five rounds after changing sides before SK Gaming could celebrate their decisive 16th round win. In the last game of the second day, Virtus.pro and fnatic, two major winners from previous years, met on the Map Cache. As counter-terrorists, the Poles bought all sorts of things after losing a round of pistols and thus stopped the Swedes' attack on the A-Spot. Virtus.pro was stronger than their opponent in the first half. After 12: 3 half-time lead. Fnatic reduced the lap difference in the second half. However, the Swedes could not avert the defeat and lost the game in the 27th round.

The so-called crouch jump bug , which BIG used in the previous day's game against FaZe Clan, was controversially discussed on the second day . With this bug it is possible to see parts of the playing area at certain points without the opponent's knowledge. After the PGL allowed the use of the bug in the morning, all 16 participating teams agreed the gentleman agreement on the evening of July 17th , in which the players unofficially agreed not to use the bug.

The Kazakhs then caught up and went 8: 7 into halftime. A triple kill by Jarosław “pasha” Jarząbkowski in the second round after a break, a savings round from Virtus.pro, brought Poland into the game for the last time. A double kill at 10:10 by Mihai “Dosia” Stolyarov stopped VP's B attack and secured Gambit the 21st round win. Then the Kazakhs played confidently. They decided the game in the 27th round.
