MLG Major Championship: Columbus 2016

The ESL One Cologne 2016 was a major tournament in the e-sports - discipline Counter-Strike: Global Offensive , which from 5 to 10 July 2016 in the Lanxess Arena in Cologne took place. The prize money of the tournament was a million dollars . SK Gaming won the tournament . It was the team's second win in a major tournament in a row, as they had previously won the MLG Major Championship: Columbus 2016 under their old Luminosity Gaming team.

qualification

The eight challenger teams of ESL One Cologne 2016 were determined via an offline qualifier. The field of participants in the qualifying tournament consisted of the eight teams eliminated in the group phase at the MLG Major Championship: Columbus 2016 and eight other teams who won a ticket for the offline qualifier through the four minor tournaments .

  • The finalists of each event qualified for the offline qualifier. The prize money of each tournament was 50,000 US dollars .

    Offline qualifier

    The offline qualifier took place from June 9th to 12th in the ESL studios in Katowice . For the first time, the qualification was held according to the Swiss system . It took a team three wins to qualify for the main tournament. After three defeats, one team was eliminated. Each game was played in the best of one mode. The map played was determined through vetoes of the teams (veto order: ABBAAB; A = team A, B = team B).

    Maps

    During the tournament, the teams had seven maps to choose from that could be played. In the best-of-one mode, both teams alternately crossed off a map until two cards remain. The map that was ultimately played was selected at random from these two maps. In the best-of-three mode, both teams initially deleted one map each. Then each side chose a map, both of which were played in the first two matches. One possible decision map was chosen at random from among the three remaining maps.

    Astralis won the Danish duel against Team Dignitas 16:12 on de_overpass and had to play in the group final against Gambit Gaming , who previously sent Counter Logic Gaming into the lower bracket. Astralis lost 6:16 against the team made up of Russians and Kazakhs on de_dust2.

    Astralis had to play in the rematch against Dignitas with her coach and former mTw player Danny "zonic" Sørensen .     In the lower bracket, the ninjas in pajamas failed because of Flipsid3 Tactics. The Ukrainians beat NiP on the second map in a one-sided game with 16: 2 on de_cache and also won on the third map de_mirage with 16:11. The Swedish lineup is eliminated for the first time with a major in the preliminary round.

    The winner of group C was the Polish lineup from Virtus.pro , which defeated the higher-placed US team Liquid in the upper bracket final with 16:12 on de_cobblestone. Before that, the team around Jarosław "pasha" Jarząbkowski beat the German representative mousesports .

    The Swedish lineup of fnatic finally secured a 16:13 win on de_train after a close game against G2 Esports. In the decisive game against FaZe, fnatic played well and won after two cards.

    Final round

    In the first two quarter-finals of the final round, the group winners Virtus.pro were able to prevail against the Astralis team, which was still weakened due to injuries, and SK Gaming against the Ukrainians from Flipsid3 Tactics after two maps. The two latter quarter-finals were won by the runners-up Team Liquid and fnatic . The three teams of Eastern European origin were all eliminated in the quarter-finals.
