League of Legends Mid-Season Invitational
The League of Legends Mid-Season Invitational (short MSI ) is an annual forming e-sports tournament, which by Riot Games - the game developers of League of Legends - is organized. League of Legends is a computer game from the MOBA genre in which two teams, each consisting of five players, compete against each other.
history
The tournament was held for the first time in 2015 and takes place in April / May at different locations. The winners of the spring split of the national or continental leagues are eligible to participate . The record winner is the SK Telecom T1 team , which, as a representative of South Korea, reached the finals in the first three editions and won two of them.
In 2018 the MSI took place in Europe for the first time; the preliminary round in the LCS Studio in Berlin and the playoffs in the Zénith in Paris .
In 2020 the MSI failed due to the global COVID-19 pandemic . Instead, Riot Games organized an online tournament with the four best teams from the LCK (South Korea) and the LPL (China). The tournament is called the Mid-Season Cup . Due to the proximity between South Korea and China as well as the internet infrastructure of both countries, Riot can regulate the latency for all players to a ping of between 30 and 40 milliseconds and thus create fairness. The Chinese team Top Esports successfully prevailed in the final with 3-1 against the reigning world champion Funplus Phoenix.
