The football club Gelsenkirchen-Schalke 04 e. V. , commonly known as FC Schalke 04 , is a German sports club from the Gelsenkirchen district of Schalke , whose e-sports department is currently active in League of Legends , FIFA and Pro Evolution Soccer .

The basis for the establishment of this department in 2016 was the takeover of the League of Legends team Elements . This made FC Schalke 04 the first classic sports club to fully incorporate an e-sports team into its club structures. In 2018 the department was outsourced to FC Schalke 04 Esports GmbH . Since 2019 the team has been participating in the League of Legends European Championship, which replaced the League of Legends Championship Series .
