List of the most successful e-athletes by prize money
This page lists the most successful e-athletes based on the prize money they have won .
The basis for the list is the esportsearnings.com database , in which the results from around 22,800 tournaments are recorded. Other databases exist or existed for certain esports titles such as sc2earnings.com and aligulac for StarCraft II and lolearnings.com for League of Legends , some of which are no longer updated, however.
Please note that this list does not include income from salaries, merchandise, advertising and sponsorship contracts or streaming, but only tournament prize money. For team games such as League of Legends , Dota 2 or Counter-Strike , the prize money for this list is distributed equally among all team members. For example, if a team of five wins $ 100,000 in prize money, $ 20,000 will be counted for each team member.
As of August 2017, there are 43 players who have won more than $ 1,000,000 and 98 who have won more than $ 500,000 in prize money. The front runner for a long time was the American Johnathan Wendel , who collected around $ 450,000 in prize money in various shooters between 1999 and 2006, but has since dropped out of the top 100. In late 2013, he was overtaken by South Korean StarCraft player Lee Jae-dong , who was the first to break the half-million dollar mark.
The leadership changed again with The International 2014 , a Dota 2 tournament endowed with over 10 million dollars in total prize money. Since then, all five members of the victorious Chinese team Newbee have clearly topped the list. In 2015, the International set a new record with total prize money of over 18 million dollars. Since then, the players on Team Evil Geniuses have topped the list. After the International 2017, in which another record prize money of around 24.5 million dollars was played, the German Kuro "Kuroky" Takhasomi led the list until the summer of 2019. Since then, the Dane Johan "N0tail" Sundstein , who won The International in 2018 and 2019 with OG. In general, the list is currently dominated by Dota-2 professionals, with Kyle "Bugha" Giersdorf the first player from one another esports discipline.
Gender ratio
It is pointed out again and again that women are massively underrepresented in the list. There is not a single woman in the top 300. At No. 329 is the Canadian transgender -Athletin Sasha Hostyn , the only woman in the top 500 at No. 2 followed by Chinese Li Xiaomeng (ranked 603 in the standings). The top 400 women on the list add up to less prize money than the best male player.
