Sasha "Scarlett" Hostyn (* 14. December 1993 in Ontario ) is a Canadian e-athlete in StarCraft 2 .

In StarCraft 2 she has been one of the 50 best players in the world and the ten best non-Korean players since September 2012, both according to the prize money won and according to the Elo system . As of February 2018, she has won over $ 250,000 in prize money.

Career

Scarlett started StarCraft 2 in April 2011. In April 2012, she joined the French team Eclypsia , but shortly after switched to Team Acer , for which she played until March 1, 2016. Already at her first offline event at the IPL 4 she surprised with victories against better rated players. However, she had her final breakthrough a little later at the Canadian Championship and the North American Championship in the summer of 2012, which she surprisingly won. At the following World Championships she survived the group stage, but retired in the first knockout round against the eventual title holder of the tournament Won Lee-sak (PartinG) from South Korea.

In 2013, all major tournaments ( Premier Events ) in StarCraft 2 were won by Koreans, with Scarlett being one of only 4 non-Korean players to reach a final. In the NorthCon final, however, she was defeated by Lee Jae-dong (Jaedong) 2: 4. The other three players were Ilyes Satouri (Stephano) from France, Johan Lucchesi (NaNiwa) from Sweden and Jens Aasgaard (Snute) from Norway.

At the WCS America, which was restructured in 2013 , her best result was a semifinal participation in the second of three seasons, although it should be noted that, in contrast to 2012, these were also open to players from other countries (especially South Korea). In addition, she achieved top placements at the Intel Extreme Masters in Singapore (quarter-finals) and the Red Bull Battle Grounds New York City (third place).

In December 2013 she lost 4-2 in a show match against NaNiwa . With a match exchange of 14 Bitcoins (around $ 9,000 at the time of the event), it was the most highly endowed StarCraft 2 show match to date. The prize money was split 80:20.

At the beginning of 2014, she struggled with a minor drop in form and was eliminated early in WCS America Season 1 and 2. In the meantime it became known that she is moving to South Korea for a few months in order to have better training opportunities. In the middle of 2014 she again achieved several top placements at the HomeStory Cup , the Red Bull Battlegrounds and the MLG Anaheim.

In 2015, Scarlett only played a few tournaments. Since August 17th, 2016 she played for Team expert for almost two years . At the end of 2016, she achieved her first major tournament victory in a long time with the victory at the American Finals of the WESG . At the beginning of 2018, she achieved her greatest success by winning the Intel Extreme Masters in Pyeongchang , which was held in cooperation with the IOC shortly before the start of the Winter Olympics. In the final, she beat the two-time world champion Kim Yoo-jin (sOs) from South Korea 4-1 and won $ 50,000 in prize money.

Scarlett has been playing for the Chinese organization Newbee since the end of 2018 . Scarlett is one of the few foreigners who regularly competes in the Korean HSL.

Private

In an interview in 2014, Sasha Hostyn described herself as transgender . Hostyn is male from birth, but assigns itself to the female gender ("male-to-female transgender"). Hostyn said in this regard that this should not play a role for the esports career, while negative views are expressed from the online community, especially via the online streaming platform Twitch, about which Hostyn was addressing with it. Official e-sports sites and organizers use female articles to label Hostyn and dispense with further explanations, such as the German Liquipedia, which is specifically dedicated to Starcraft e-sports.
