Global StarCraft II League

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Global Starcraft II League (GSL for short) is a StarCraft II tournament, which is organized by GomTV and Blizzard Entertainment in South Korea . Since 2016 the tournament is no longer organized by GomTV, but by AfreecaTV. All broadcasts are accompanied by experienced commentators.

There is an English stream for all non-Korean viewers. With the Global StarCraft II Team League (GSTL for short), there was also a team league until 2013 that was held parallel to the GSL and competed with the Proleague .

Story and mode

The 2010 Open Seasons were the first GSL tournaments. There were three first-time tournaments with a total prize pool of 600 million won (around € 380,000) and prize money of 100 million won for the winner. These sums attracted worldwide attention because they were among the largest in esports history to date. The purpose of the 2010 Open Season was to qualify players for the Code S and Code A leagues.

From 2011 the GSL became a regular tournament that was held several times a year. The qualification for the Code A minor league is always held before a new season. Only the top players of the Korean Battle.net (Code B) are allowed to participate. A total of 32 players play in the Code A League. The top seven of the Code-A-League and the last eight Code-S players take part in Up & Down matches , five in each group. The two best players in each group of five qualify for the Code S League, which consists of the 32 best players in Korea. The Code-S winner is chosen as the GSL Champion .

The top 3 players in the GSL rankings as well as 7 winners of other important tournaments from last year such as B. MLG , DreamHack or the World Cyber Games qualify for the Blizzard Cup. The tournament started with a group stage with 2 groups of 5 players. The two first placed go straight to the semifinals, the second and third placed play in 2 quarterfinals for a place in the semifinals. The winner can call himself the best player of the GSL Tour of the past year.

The American Major League Gaming and GomTV organized a player exchange between the tournaments in 2011 and 2012. The MLG invited four Korean players directly to the championship pool for each tournament. Since the MLG Anaheim 2011, the MLG winner has achieved a Code-S placement. The top three non-Korean players (top four if the winner is Korean) received Code A placements.

The GSL has been part of the international StarCraft II World Championship Series (WCS for short) since 2013 .
