Joona "Serral" Sotala (born March 22, 1998 ) is a Finnish e-athlete in the StarCraft 2 discipline .
His biggest success was winning first place at Blizzcon 2018, which was endowed with $ 280,000 in prize money. This also ended the almost two decades of dominance of Korean players in StarCraft 2 and its predecessor StarCraft: Brood War .
In terms of career prize money won, he is by far the most successful non-Korean StarCraft 2 player of all time with $ 785,661 and is in second place overall on this list. (As of November 2019).
In December 2019 Serral was personally invited to the Finnish independence celebration by the Finnish President.
Career
Serral has been playing StarCraft 2 competitively since 2012. However, his international breakthrough did not come until around 2017, when he won around $ 80,000 in prize money in one year. Among other things, he won the European final of the World Electronic Sports Games in the final against Nerchio . He also managed to qualify for the season finale at Blizzcon, but this year he was eliminated in the preliminary round.
In 2018 he traveled to a total of eleven international tournaments and won eight of them. In addition to winning the season finale at Blizzcon, he also won all four tournaments of the StarCraft II World Championship Series .
family
Serral's brother Jonne Sotala (* 1994) is also a StarCraft 2 player, albeit at a much less successful level. He plays under the nickname Protosser and achieved fourth place in the Finnish championships in 2012.
