StarCraft II World Championship Series

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The StarCraft II World Championship Series ( WCS ) is an international series of events at E-Sports -Titel StarCraft II .

meaning

The WCS has been organized by Blizzard Entertainment (the game developer of StarCraft II) in cooperation with ESL , MLG (until June 2013), OGN and GOMTV since 2012 . The highlight of the season is the Battle.net World Championship , in which prize money of several hundred thousand dollars will be distributed. Before 2012, Blizzard held invitational tournaments ( Blizzcon Invitational ); but with significantly less prize money.

With total prize money of $ 1.6 million in 2013, WCS offers by far the highest prize money for StarCraft 2 and one of the highest in esports in general. Media not specialized in e-sports, such as Der Standard and T-Online , have already reported on the WCS.

2012

At the first edition of the WCS, a total of around 500,000 dollars in prize money was distributed. Through the national and continental qualifying tournaments, 32 players earned their starting place at the Battle.net World Championship , which took place in Shanghai in 2012. With Won Lee-sak (player name: PartinG ) a South Korean player prevailed as expected and won the $ 100,000 main prize. The only German-speaking participant Giacomo Thüs (player name: Sock ) was eliminated in the group stage.

National championships

The national champions of the eight countries marked in yellow qualified directly for the world championship. The remaining 24 places were awarded at the continental championships.

2013

In 2013 there were major structural changes compared to the previous year. Instead of one-off national and continental championships, an extensive system consisting of three seasons each took place in the regions of Europe, North America and South Korea. A similar system was already established in South Korea with the GSL and OSL leagues .

At the end of each season, the 16 players (the five to six best placed from the three regions) played an international final ( Global Finals ). WCS points can be collected according to a certain points key. WCS points can also be earned at several other tournaments, for example at DreamHack and the Intel Extreme Masters . The 16 players with the most WCS points qualified for the 2013 World Championship, which this time took place as part of the Blizzcon in Anaheim .

Since the players could choose in which region they would compete, many South Korean players decided to start in the supposedly easier regions of Europe and America. This ultimately led to the fact that with the Swede Johan Lucchesi (player name: NaNiwa) only a player not from South Korea made it into the finals of the World Cup. There the Protoss player Kim Yoo-jin (player name: sOs) won somewhat surprisingly with a 4-1 final victory over Jaedong .

2014

At the end of 2013, Blizzard announced the first information about WCS 2014. Among other things, it was announced that the system will be retained with three seasons in the three major regions. The season finals, however, have been abolished. In return, the prize money has been increased slightly, in particular the winner of the Korean WCS (GSL) receives significantly higher prize money than in 2013.

2015

A major change to the tournament calendar has been announced for 2015. With the SPOTV StarLeague (SSL) there will be a second big league in addition to the GSL in South Korea. Instead of separate WCS leagues in Europe and America, there will be a unified division from 2015, in which, however, only players with permanent residence outside South Korea are eligible to participate.

2016

In 2016 some changes were made to the WCS system again. There is now the WCS Circuit Championship in winter, spring and summer. These tournaments have a purse of $ 150,000. Only players living outside of South Korea are eligible. There were only two editions of the GSL and the SSL , the prize money of the GSL being ₩ 230,000,000 (≃ 194,480 $) and that of the SSL ₩ 134,000,000 (≃ 113,364 $). The winner of every GSL, SSL and WCS Circuit Championship got a direct seat at BlizzCon . The BlizzCon prize pool has also been increased.
