Lee "Jaedong" Jae-dong (born January 9, 1990 ) is a professional South Korean e-athlete in the computer games Starcraft: Brood War and StarCraft II .

He is one of only 4 players who could win a "golden mouse", which is awarded for winning three OSL tournaments. Jaedong participated in the 2012 WCS eliminations South Korea and the 2012 GSL Code S Season 4 and was one of the first professional Brood War players to switch to Starcraft 2.

2013 he passed by his second place finish at the WCS finals on the BlizzCon meantime Johnathan Wendel e-athletes with the most prize money earned. Currently (2018) he has won the equivalent of around 637,000 US dollars in tournaments.

Career

Even in his first year as a professional in Starcraft Broodwar, Lee Jae-dong was the zerg with the second highest profit share among professional players at the end of the year. This year his "win rates" against Zerg and Protoss in particular were very high at over 70%. This earned him the title of "Rookie of the Year". In 2007 Jaedong was also able to eradicate his weakness against Terrans and presented a 12-to-0 run against Terrans like NaDa and others. This strength in every match-up earned Lee Jae-dong the first OSL title in 2007.

At the beginning of 2008, Jaedong also rose to be the best Zerg player in the KeSPA rankings. Later that year, Jaedong also held its own for four months as number 1 on the KeSPA All Breed Ranking. In addition, Lee Jae-dong could win his first MSL title. In 2009 Jaedong was also able to win the "golden mouse" with his third win at an OSL (EVER, Batoo, Bacchus). In the same year Jaedong was able to win the WCG 2009 title against Stork in Chengdu, China. In 2010, the great rivalry with Flash was defined , as the two Starcraft Broodwar greats met in five finals, three of which went to Flash. Still, Jaedong was still the best zerg player according to the KeSPA ranking.

In 2011 Jaedong's achievements fell sharply, and since the first rumors arose at the end of 2010 that Jaedong would switch to StarCraft 2 , many were expecting this switch to one of the greatest Starcraft Broodwar legends.

In mid-2012, this change also became official when Lee Jae-dong took part in the 2012 WCS Korea Nationals and was able to take part in the 2012 GSL Code S Season 4 through a KeSPA headquarters. In both tournaments, however, his performance was rather modest. Jaedong played very well, but could rarely find the right time to win games in which he had an advantage. So he fell from Code S to Code A and also lost his first game there.

On December 6, 2012 it was announced that Jaedong has switched to the American team Evil Geniuses . In 2013 Jaedong reached five finals in five major tournaments, but he couldn't win any until the ASUS ROG at Northcon, where he clinched his first tournament win in 2013 in the final against Scarlett in December . His last victory was in September 2014 e-sports at the World Championships, where he beat Snute of Team Liquid .

On November 1, 2016, he retired from professional sports. Evil Genius closed its Starcraft II division the following year. Since then, Jaedong has been without a team and is back in leagues and tournaments for StarCraft: Brood War.

Play style

Lee Jae-dong changed the standard game for Zerg in many ways. So did Jaedong in the Zerg vs. Terran Matchup the 2 Hatch (only with 2 bases) Mutalisk opening very popular as well as in the Zerg vs. Zerg his extraordinary zergling game with the use of advantageous attack positions and run-bys (this is also used heavily in StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm , i.e. if you have residues in the gas resource, you rely on increasing zergling aggression). In the Zerg vs. Protoss Matchup developed Jaedong a new counterattack against the play style of Kim "Bisu" Taek Yong with Scourge and a large number of bases.

While it is generally accepted that Jaedong's greatest strength is his micromanagement , he has refined or made popular many zerg trends by switching between very aggressive and business-based play styles.
