Lee "Flash" Young-ho (born July 5, 1992 in Daejeon ) is a professional South Korean esportsman in StarCraft: Brood War and StarCraft 2 . Flash is considered the most successful and strongest StarCraft: Brood War player of all time and has broken or set a multitude of records.

Career

Lee Young-ho made his debut in the Proleague in 2007 at the age of 14 for his team KTF MagicNs (renamed KT Rolster in 2009 ). He also qualified for the first time in 2007 for the group stages of the two big individual tournaments OnGameNet StarLeague (OSL) and MBCGame StarCraft League (MSL), and he was able to reach the semi-finals in the OSL.

In the following year, Flash became the youngest winner of an OSL at the age of 15. After a very short low in 2008, Flash was able to perfect many of his strategies and in 2009 and 2010 he reinforced his outstanding position. During this time, the rivalry with Jaedong , which was nicknamed "LeeSsang" games, which means something like "double lees", was also defined.

In 2010, Lee Young-ho was also the first player to get into six MSL and OSL finals. With the victory at the "Korean Air OSL Season 2 Finals" in Shanghai, he became the first player since NaDa to hold the OSL and MSL titles at the same time. A victory at the World Cyber Games also followed in the same year.

In 2011, however, Flash was slowed down by health problems in his wrist, but was still able to score strongly in the team leagues and also book another MSL title for himself. With this victory Lee Young-ho was able to achieve his sixth title, which until then only NaDa had achieved. At this point, Flash was also the owner of the "Golden Mouse" and the "Golden Badge".

Lee Young-ho's official StarCraft 2 debut was at the 2012 MLG Spring Championship KeSPA Invitational, where he beat all other KeSPA players. On his GSL debut, Flash got a Code A seat and was able to fight his way into the "Up & Down" matches in Season 4 2012. In the following period he was initially unable to build on his dominance from the Brood War times in the GSL. In the Proleague , however, he remained one of the most successful players for his team KT Rolster.

In August 2014 he won his first major individual title in StarCraft 2 with the ESL Intel Extreme Masters in Toronto, beating his teammate and former GSL winner Zest 4-1 in the final .

On December 1, 2015, he announced his retirement from professional esports.

In February 2016 he started a StarCraft: Brood War Comeback with his broadcast on the AfreecaTV platform and victories at several invitation tournaments and show events.

In 2017, he won over $ 100,000 in prize money, including a. by victories in the ASL (AfreecaTV StarCraft League) Season 2, 3 and 4.

At the beginning of 2019 he had to cancel participation in ASL Season 7 due to health problems in his right arm. After he recovered, he was able to win the ASL Season 8 (June-September 2019).

He currently continues his broadcast on AfreecaTV.

Play style

Lee Young-ho has an exceptionally deep strategic understanding of Starcraft. He has developed / modified a large number of build orders himself to suit his preferences in play style. His APM are over 400. This is another reason why he can defend himself very well in defensive situations through precise micromanagement . He mostly relies on this defense ability in the initial phase in order to be able to develop his economy ( macromanagement ) faster than his opponents.

He prefers to use fast, cheap units (eagles) to disrupt the enemy's structure and at the same time to scout him out, while quickly pushing the number of his combat units, including reinforcing technologies, to the limit (200 units in Starcraft : Brood War). To decide the game, he then starts attacks and quickly rebuilds lost units.

Since he knows the strategies of the other races very well, he knows when to initiate countermeasures. In some games, this makes it appear as if he has clairvoyant abilities, e.g. B. scans the map exactly at the point where important actions are initiated by the enemy, or he starts building suitable defenses when combat units have just been built by the enemy.

Due to the asymmetry of Starcraft: Brood War there are times during the game at which one of the players can send stronger units / associations into battles. Lee Young-ho knows and uses these attacks called "timing push" perfectly to throw his opponents back in their economy or to decimate their combat units.

In the course of his career he shows more creativity and also uses more aggressive or unusual build orders, with which he tries to gain an advantage in the early stages.
