Counter-Strike: Source (abbreviated CS: S ) is a computer game in the genre of online - tactical shooter . It is a port of the popular predecessor Counter-Strike to the source engine developed by Valve , which is also used in Half-Life 2 . This made the game graphics much more detailed and realistic. In addition, the can thanks to the use Havok - physics engine events in the game world such. B. falling and rolling barrels or swinging cable cars and the like can be displayed more realistically.

In August 2012, Source's successor , Global Offensive, was released .

Game content

As in Counter-Strike, a battle between two groups, the terrorists (T) and the counter-terrorists (CT), a special police unit, is fought on the basis of a turn-based first-person shooter .

In the game there are two predefined scenarios: In so-called "Defuse" cards (English for. Defusing be placed has a bomb at a predetermined location or mitigated). On hostage cards, hostages must be rescued or their rescue prevented. However, the community has developed a large number of other scenarios, such as: B. Surf Maps, Council Maps, Pool Party Maps, Jail Mod, Gungame Maps, Zombie Mod, Deathrun, Aim Maps or Minigames.

There are also various extensions that z. B. cancel the turn-based system (deathmatch).

History of the game

A development team led by Minh Le ("Gooseman") and Jess Cliffe released the first beta version of Counter-Strike on March 3, 1999 as a free downloadable mod for Half-Life . The team was later recruited by Valve and Version 1.0 of Counter-Strike was sold as an independent game. Version 1.6 is the current version of Counter-Strike. The official successor was Counter-Strike: Condition Zero, which appeared on March 1, 2004 and was published with the same graphics engine and slight improvements. Condition Zero achieved a certain distribution, but not the popularity of the original Counter-Strike, as this was mostly just a graphical update and many players decided not to switch due to the necessary adjustment and the new acquisition costs.

On August 19, 2004 , the beta test for the successor "Counter-Strike: Source" began, which ended with the official release on the Steam platform on October 7, 2004. "CS: S" is an implementation of the Counter-Strike principle to the new source - graphics engine , which for Half-Life 2 was developed. The Havok - physics engine , which was already known from games like Deus Ex: Invisible War , Painkiller or Far Cry , is also used.

CS: S was included with Half-Life 2 , which was released on November 16, 2004, and was released in October 2005 in a new retail version, which is published by Valve and also contains Day of Defeat: Source and Half-Life 2: Deathmatch .

The patch , which was released on January 19, 2005, added bots for CS: S so that the game can also be played offline against computer-controlled characters after logging on to Steam on the Internet .

On June 23, 2010 an update appeared which ported the first person shooter to the newest version of the source engine, which was already used in the games of the "Orangebox". In addition, it is now also possible to play under Mac OS X.

Although the source version of Counter-Strike is also very popular, it has met with criticism from professional gamers. Above all, the "blocking" by moving objects, such as barrels and boxes, is criticized, as the physics engine can lead to movements of the character that cannot be influenced, which creates an undesirable random effect. This shortcoming causes a lot of displeasure, but can be completely switched off with the appropriate server configuration.

Another point of criticism is based on the fact that the appearance of the game world can be influenced by a large number of different variants of graphic settings (shadows on / off, lighting effects, high dynamic range rendering ) and players can use it to gain advantages. Online leagues such as the ESL counteract this with regulations.

In addition, the inadequate fight against cheats was criticized. Although Valve developed the technology of the game with the second version of the "Valve Anticheat" (VAC2), there is a lack of necessary dynamics, as there is often no reaction to new types of cheats, or only very late. For Counter-Strike: Source there are independent, server-side anti-cheat programs such as Detox Anti Cheat or the ESL Wire Anti-Cheat (WAC) used by the Electronic Sports League .
