Total War: Warhammer is the tenth part of the computer strategy game series Total War by the British developer studio Creative Assembly . As the first game in the series, it is not based on a historical background, but is a licensed product of the tabletop game Warhammer Fantasy from Games Workshop . The first of two planned sequels was Total War: Warhammer II in 2017 . A joint campaign card is activated by purchasing both parts.

The game was released on May 24, 2016 for Microsoft Windows , November 22, 2016 for Linux and April 18, 2017 for mac OS . The game is distributed by the Japanese publisher Sega .

Total War: Warhammer is set in the so-called " Old World " at the time of the reign of Emperor Karl Franz, who took control of the human empire in 2502 of the imperial calendar .

Gameplay

In addition to the human empire, the greenskins (orcs and goblins), the dwarves and the vampire lords can be played . The Chaos faction can also be played for free for pre-orderers and buyers in the first week . New races have been unlocked through free and paid Downloadable Content . In February 2017, the now playable Kingdom of Bretonia was added. Each race or faction has its own special characteristics and hero characters. Compared to the historically oriented Total War series offshoots, the latter means that elements of a role-playing game are increasingly incorporated into the game mechanics , as the leaders collect experience points and gain special properties that they can use in combat. Due to their very specific characteristics, the races play themselves much differently than the factions in other parts of the Total War series.

On April 22, 2015, Creative Assembly announced Total War: Warhammer as the next title in the series. It is the first part of the series, which is set in a fantasy scenario. Total War: Warhammer is the first part of a planned trilogy set in the world of Warhammer Fantasy .

reception

The game was rated positively in the first test reports. GameStar initially awarded a rating of 85%, which was later increased to 87%, PC Games rated the game with 87% and IGN Entertainment awarded 8.6 out of 10 possible points. At Metacritic is an average of 86 points based on 62 reviews gives (as of June 7, 2016).

The game was purchased over 500,000 times within the first three days, setting a new record within the Total War series.

Sequels

There will be two sequels, each of which will expand the campaign map of the first part by further continents, races and factions of the Warhammer world. The aim is to integrate all 15 major factions of the eighth edition of the Warhammer Fantasy tabletop template into the game.

Total War: Warhammer II was released on September 28, 2017 . With the second part of the series, the game world is expanded to include the high elves , dark elves , lizard people and skaven .
