Blood Bowl 2 is a computer game based on American football in a Warhammer Fantasy scenario. It is based on the board game of the same name by Games Workshop and the sequel to Blood Bowl from 2009. Like its predecessor, it was developed by the French developer Cyanide Studios and was released in September 2015 via Focus Home Interactive . In addition to the first publication, there is an expanded version called the Legendary Edition .
Gameplay
Like its predecessor, Blood Bowl 2 is a parody version of American football that has been adapted to the Warhammer Fantasy scenario . It combines elements of a sports or management simulation with a turn-based strategy game. As in football, two teams with eleven players each compete against each other with the aim of carrying the ball into the opposing end zone ( touchdown ). Unlike in football, opposing players can also be specifically knocked down, injured or even killed. The team with the most points does not necessarily win, but must also be able to play until the end.
One of the biggest changes compared to its predecessor was the elimination of the real-time game mode. Like the board game template, the game is purely turn-based and the playing field is divided into fields like a chessboard. The production is designed like a TV show called Blood Bowl TV by the virtual broadcaster Cabalvision. As a sports commentator, the vampire Jim Johnson accompanies the game with the ogre and ex-player Bob Bifford. In the story campaign, for which some rule modifications were built in compared to the tournament modes, the player takes over the team of the human Reikland Reavers and is supposed to lead it to success. Compared to its predecessor, the player can now also expand his stadium.

The basic game initially consisted of eight teams. In addition, there were the two teams of Lizardmen and Wood Elves, which were awarded as a pre-order bonus, and which could then be purchased as a downloadable extension for a fee. With further expansion the selection increased to 16, with the expansion to the Legendary finally to 24 teams (see table). The teams are made up of representatives of the same races - e.g. B. Orcs, Elves, Skaven or humans - or factions - for example underworld inhabitants - together. The team members gain experience over the course of the games and thereby gain strength as in a role-playing game . Their performance can also be increased with better equipment. The purchase of extras such as paramedics (for injured players) or bribes (for referees) provides additional chances of victory. The management part includes the engagement of particularly outstanding star players, the activity on the transfer market and the negotiation of sponsorship contracts in order to have enough financial means to improve the team. The stadium can also be expanded over time.
In addition to the single player mode, the game can also be played online in various league and tournament variants against other human players.
development
Focus Home Interactive announced the development of Blood Bowl 2 in February 2013. It should be published at the end of the same year. The game engine was reprogrammed for the sequel . In fact, the release was postponed to September 22, 2015.
Pre-orders received an additional team as a bonus DLC , PS4 players the team of the lizard men, players on Xbox One and PC the wood elves. Both teams were also open to anyone to buy afterwards. In December 2015, Cyanide announced the release of four more teams via DLC. PC players who already owned the game before the first DLC was released received the teams for free. It all started with the Norse people in May 2016. The undead followed in July 2016, the necromancers in September 2016 and finally the Nurgle in November 2016. In February, Cyanide finally released the Chaos Dwarfs and Khemri as a download extension.
In July 2017, Cyanide announced the Legendary Edition for September 2017 with eight additional teams, new multiplayer game modes and, for single players, the Eternal League and Challenge mode. From August 23 to September 5, Cyanide conducted a beta test.

Blood Bowl 2 received good ratings on the PC ( Metacritic : 76 out of 100) and mixed ratings on the consoles (Xbox: 70 / PS4: 72).
