Warhammer 40,000: Space Wolf is a turn-based strategy game with trading cards in the science fiction game universe Warhammer 40,000 . In the game, the player controls a troop of Space Marines in a fight against representatives of the chaos forces and machine beings of the Necrons. The program was first published on October 28, 2014 for iOS , and on July 16, 2015 also for Android . On these platforms, the game used a free-to-play business model. The Windows version released in 2017, on the other hand, was offered for a one-off payment.

action

The Empire sends the Space Marines from the Order of the Space Wolves to the planet Kanak in the Milky Way Segmentum Obscurus. When the Space Marines attack cruiser leaves warp room, it is suddenly attacked and destroyed by a Berserker-class Chaos cruiser. The wreck crashes to the surface of the planet, only a few occupants survive. The player takes on the role of Valgard Twice-Slain, a Squad Commander of the Space Wolves, who first opposes the treacherous Chaos Space Marines of the Word Bearer, led by the Dark Apostle Oriax the Persuader, in a campaign. The team prevents the Word Bearers from successfully completing a ritual to awaken a Keeper of Secrets, a Great Demon of the Chaos God Slaanesh. The failed ritual, however, awakens another enemy, the Necrons, which the player must then defeat as well.

Gameplay

Space Wolves is based on the principle of the trading card game in combination with a free-to-play business model. Reviews compared it to the gameplay of Metal Gear Acid . At the beginning of a battle, the player creates a deck of cards, e.g. B. Weapons and special skills that should be available for use. Players and computer opponents play these cards in turns. The number of possibilities per round is determined by action points that each played card requires. The actions triggered are visually simulated on the display in 3D graphics.

Part of the game is the acquisition of additional trading cards and the upgrading of the cards already received by combining them with a card of the same type. In the versions for smartphone and tablet, the player can buy game content for real money. These include booster packs with new, randomly selected additional cards, and runes that can be used to revive player characters or to increase the chances of success on rare cards.

development

The game was announced in August 2013 with a free-to-play business model. In September 2014, HeroCraft soft-launched the game in South Africa before finally releasing the game worldwide for iOS on October 28, 2014. In April 2015, the game received an update that included a multiplayer mode 3 vs. 3 introduced. The Android version was released on July 16, 2015. An update with a PvE survival mode was released in June 2016. In May 2017, the Saga of the Great Awakening, ten new missions with the fight against the Necrons, was added.

For publication on PC, the business model was converted to a one-time purchase. On February 16, 2017, the game was released on the Steam distribution platform as an early version, which is still under development, as part of an early access program . The program ended on September 21, and Space Wolf has been the full version ever since.

Warhammer 40,000: Space Wolf received mixed reviews in the mobile version ( Metacritic : 69 out of 100).

"Despite its looks, this Warhammer 40k strategy game is about as graceful and elegant as the bulky space marines being portrayed."

"Aside from its looks, this Warhammer 40k strategy game is about as elegant as the clunky Space Marines it depicts."

- Campbell Bird : Test report 148Apps

"You could argue that the game is a little too complex, that sometimes it's a bit vague when explaining its mechanics, but for some that's going to be half the fun."

“One could argue that the game is a little too complex, that it is sometimes a little too daring to explain its game mechanics; but for some, that's half the fun. "

- Harry Slater : Pocket Gamer review

"Space Wolf is a gorgeous and full-featured card-based strategy game with layers upon layers of finesse that fans of the Warhammer 40K universe will no doubt eat up. However, it relies on a hefty amount of" buy Y to do X " sensibilities, so if you can't get behind that, you might be better off with another strategy game. "

“Space Wolf is a marvelous and full-fledged card-based strategy game with tons of levels of finesse that fans of the Warhammer 40k universe will undoubtedly soak up. However, it gives a fierce "pay this to do this" feeling; therefore, if you can't overlook it, you might be better off with another strategy game. "

- Brittany Vincent : Gamezebo review

A tester of the PC version of the magazine Hooked Gamers was more positive:

"Though it is sometimes frustrating, it's a good bit of fun that takes an interesting approach to the genre that you won't find done any better elsewhere."

"Though frustrating at times, it's a fun work that shows an interesting approach to the genre that you can't find better anywhere else."
