Warhammer 40,000: Inquisitor - Martyr is an action role-playing game in the role-playing universe Warhammer 40,000 from Games Workshop . It was developed by the Hungarian developer Neocore Games and released for Windows on June 5, 2018 after an early access phase . In collaboration with the French publisher Bigben Interactive , the studio released the games for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles in August 2018 .

action

The action takes place in the remote Caligari sector in the Segmentum Tempestus of the human empire. The sector is characterized by the constant threat of so-called warp surges, spatial anomalies that can separate entire systems from normal space for centuries and cause chaos to intensify. In this sector, a long-lost inquisitor ship named "Martyr" appears again and calls attention to itself with appropriate emergency calls. The head of the conclave in the Caligari Sector, Grigori Maldor, sends one of his inquisitors to clarify the fate of the ship.

Gameplay

The player has the choice between three classes with different focuses and skills for his player character: Crusader (close combat), psyker (magician) and assassin (ranged combat, evasion). With his character, the player lands on different planets of the Caligari sector to repel enemy waves of attack and to clear the areas, to free allied characters or to support as an escort. Ice planets, urban areas or space stations, for example, serve as locations. As is usual in an action role-playing game, you will meet a numerically superior opponent who has to be defeated in action-oriented real-time battles. These are recruited from most factions in the Warhammer 40k universe, including Chaos Cultists and Demons. A special function is the cover system, through which the character can temporarily hide behind structures from attacks that can also be destroyed. The character gathers experience in killing opponents and can develop its attributes in the course of the game. New skills are bestowed by equipping them with weapons and armor. These can be found in-game or purchased from a retailer. There is also the possibility of creating your own objects by crafting. If the character dies, it is returned to a previously reached respawn point and can continue the game from this point.

The multiplayer mode includes individual cooperative battles with up to three players as well as duels 1 against 1 or 2 against 2. There is no full co-op access to the campaign. A fellow player can only be invited to cleaning missions during the campaign, but is not allowed to create his own character, but only to choose from three pre-generated variants per class. This figure has no inventory and its strength is identical to that of the main player.

In a later update, the Warzone mode was introduced for high-level characters. It is a horde mode that gives high-level characters the chance of high-quality equipment.

“Mechanically, narrative and in terms of character development, a successful action role-playing game in the Warhammer 40K universe. However, the potential of some elements is currently only hinted at. "

- Mathias Oertel : Test report 4Players

"Martyr captures the template well stylistically, but fails because of the generic gameplay and the weak story."

- Benjamin Braun : Test report Gamestar

"Too much games-as-a-service cruft gets in the way of a potentially decent action-RPG."

"Too much games-as-a-service rubbish prevents a potentially decent action role-playing game."
