On Metacritic it currently achieves (as of February 2020) a Metascore of 75, which stands for “generally positive reviews”, and a user score of 5.3, which stands for “mixed and average reviews”.

Initially, the game was criticized because of the small differences between the factions and reduced game functions compared to its predecessors. However, updates have partially corrected these problems.

The game won the award in the “Best Strategy Game” category at the “The Independent Game Developers' Association Award” 2018. It was also nominated for the “Best Educational Game”, “Best Audio Design” and “Heritage” categories.
