from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Spartan: Total Warrior is a spin-off action game from the Total War series developed by Creative Assembly and published by Sega . It was released on Xbox , PlayStation 2, and GameCube . The game contains 14 different levels in which you as a Spartan warrior, with your Greek allies and with the help of the god of war Ares, have to fight against the Roman Empire.

Spartan: Total Warrior is very free in its handling of historical myths and has more in common with games like God of War .

action

The game takes place in the time of the Roman Empire, during the reign of Emperor Tiberius . The Roman Empire has conquered Greece , but one place, Sparta , is still successfully fighting against it. The Romans, under General Crassus, have besieged the city and are preparing to attack. The Spartan (controlled by the player) fights alongside the Spartans Castor and Pollux to defend the walls. Since the Romans fail to conquer the city, Crassus sends Talos , a giant bronze man, to attack the walls. The Spartan destroys Talos with the city's ballistae . That night, Ares instructs the Spartans to fetch the swords of Athena from a well-guarded Roman camp. After finding the swords of Athena, with the help of Castor, he meets Electra, the princess of the Amazons , and several other prisoners. Electra warns the Spartans that the Romans have a new, powerful weapon. This turns out to be correct, as the Romans can use this weapon and the power of Medusa to turn a whole phalanx of troops into stone. The Spartan returns to the camp, kills Crassus, destroys the weapon, and takes Medusa's shield.

Ares speaks to the Spartan again and instructs him to go to Troy and find the spear of Achilles to save Sparta. He travels with Castor, Pollux and Electra through the wasteland, north of Greece, and there saves a village from the hands of the barbarian warrior Beowulf . He gets his hammer, death walker. Then the Spartan descends alone into the underworld of Troy. He fights his way to Achilles' grave. On the way he meets the magician Sejanus , Tiberius' right hand man, who sends many skeletons and undead Trojans to fight the Spartan. After reaching the grave, the Spartan has to fight his nemesis, an exact copy of his self, who has the same abilities and knows every movement of the Spartan. The Spartan survives again, and carries the spear his nemesis was armed with. He fights his way out of the underworld, finds his allies again, leaves the city and kills the hydra who watches over the exit. But the Spartans learn from Sejanus that Sparta was destroyed by the Romans in their absence.

The Spartan is aware that Tiberius must be killed and his empire stopped. He travels to Athens , where he meets the scientist Archimedes and leads the Athenian resistance against the Romans. The Spartan activates Archimedes' invention, Apollo's eye, to focus the sun's light into a single ray that destroys everything it hits. With this beam he kills the undead dragon Sejanus'. Sejanus kills Pollux and turns him into an undead servant whom Castor redeems in battle. The Spartan fights against Sejanus and kills him.

After leaving Athens, the Spartan travels to Rome . To do this, he has to cross the gates of Saturn , a fortress in the Alps . There he meets again, Sejanus, who has returned from the dead. Before he finally kills Sejanus, the Spartan kills his priestesses, the source of his power. The Spartan continues to Rome, where he plans to kill Tiberius. The Spartan strides through the sewers to get into the city while the others on the surface travel to the Colosseum where Tiberius is attending a major event. After killing the Minotaur , the Spartan manages to reach the surface. With the Spartan's friends discovered, they had to detonate the bombs that were supposed to kill Tiberius too early. So Tiberius survived. The Spartan saves Electra and Castor and makes his way to Tiberius. This falls out of position and dies. The Spartan makes his way into the arena where he meets the true antagonist of the story: Ares, who clarifies the truth to him.

The Spartan, who never knew his own identity, is actually the son of a servant to Aphrodite and Ares. Ares killed the maid, so the gods cast him out. They had removed all memories of the Spartan's past and sent them to the Spartans with his superhuman powers. He was hidden from Ares, who wanted to kill him. Ares had helped the Romans conquer Greece to lure the Spartans to Rome. The Spartan kills Ares in one final battle and the story ends.

Gameplay

Spartan: Total Warrior features very fast hack-and-slash gameplay. A distinction must be made between two important types of attack: centered attacks against one opponent and dissolute attacks against several. The centered attack is quick and deals high damage; the dissolute is slower with moderate damage.

The further you progress in the game, the more weapons are available: sword and shield, bow and arrow , an upgrade for sword and shield (The Shield of Medusa), two swords (Swords of Athena), an upgrade for the bow, a Hammer (death biter) and a spear (spear of Achilles). Each of these weapons has good and bad properties. The swords of Athena are very quick, but do only a moderate amount of damage; Deathbiter does a lot of damage but is very slow; the spear of Achilles is moderately fast and a good all-round weapon. In addition to the melee attack, the player can also take out his enemies with a bow and arrow and limited ammunition. Furthermore it is still possible to use the "power of the gods". This is represented by a blue tank that fills up slowly; each weapon has a special magical power. Another important feature of the game is that the Spartan gets adrenaline after a certain number of attacks . This adrenaline can be used to perform powerful anger attacks.

The Spartan also has some Greek friends who support him in his battles. He acts as a leader, which the soldiers follow.
