Octopath Traveler is a video game of the RPG genre for the Nintendo switch and the PC . The game was developed by Square Enix and published by Nintendo .
The Switch version was released worldwide on July 13, 2018 and sold over a million times in less than a month. A port for Steam was released on June 7, 2019.
Gameplay
Octopath Traveler is a Japanese role-playing game (JRPG) with a turn-based combat system. What is particularly striking about the game is the graphic style called "HD-2D", which the developers describe as a combination of 16-bit Super Nintendo graphics and polygon environments with current effects.
At the beginning of the game, the player chooses one of eight different characters, which he then plays as the protagonist . Each character has a different backstory, and each one starts out differently. In the game, the player meets the other characters that were available for selection and can form a team of a maximum of four people from them. The team members can be exchanged and you can also change the protagonist after you have finished your story.
development
Octopath Traveler was developed by Square Enix Business Division 11 who were already developing Bravely Default . They were supported by the Acquire developer studio. Square Enix's Tomoya Asano and Masashi Takahashi started development and acted as producers. They chose Acquire as their development partner because of their skills in handling pixel art in their game What Did I Do to Deserve This, My Lord? . Keisuke Miyauchi of Acquire was then employed as a director.
Octopath Traveler's development began before the Nintendo Switch was officially announced. However, the game was first officially announced at the Nintendo Switch presentation on January 13, 2017. During this presentation the name "Octopath Traveler" was still used as the project title.
In September 2017, Square Enix released a demo version of Octopath Traveler to get initial player opinions on the game. This demo had already been downloaded over a million times by the end of January 2018 and a survey asking for feedback from players had been completed nearly 50,000 times. Based on this feedback, some adjustments have been made to the game. During a Nintendo Direct on March 8, 2018, Nintendo announced further information about the game. So "Octopath Traveler" was set as the name and announced the release date of July 13, 2018. On June 12, 2018, during another Nintendo Direct for E3 2018, another demo version containing the first chapter of the game was announced for June 14.
In March 2019, Square Enix announced that Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent would be a prequel to Octopath Traveler for mobile devices in the summer of 2019 . In Champions of the Continent the story of Octopath Traveler is to be told. Square Enix also announced that another sequel to Octopath Traveler will be released for the Nintendo Switch. On June 6, 2019, Square Enix announced in an unannounced trailer that the game would be released on the Steam distribution platform the following day. The game was released punctually on June 7, 2019.

Octopath Traveler received mostly positive feedback. It achieved a Metascore of 83 out of 100 on Metacritic . The game was praised above all for the innovative mechanics of the eight different protagonists and for the extraordinary graphics. The game was also praised for its balanced combat system and music. The game was criticized primarily for the amount of work involved in leveling up the characters.
"Sympathetic old-school Japanese role-playing game with a strong round-robin combat system, a little too much grind and eight heroes whose stories range from exciting to banal."
“'Octopath Traveler' turns out to be an almost flawlessly playable retro epic with 80 to 100 hours of playing time, sympathetic heroes, a complex battle system and excellent music. It's just a shame that the heroes only interact a little with each other and the gameplay feels a bit formulaic during longer sessions. "
