2048 is a free computer game that can be played by a single player on the web browser and mobile devices. It was created in March 2014 by 19 year old Italian web developer Gabriele Cirulli. The object of the game is to create a tile with the number 2048 by moving and combining other tiles.

Gameplay

2048 is played on a playing field with 4 × 4 boxes on which there are tiles that are labeled with powers of two (from to ).

At the beginning there are two random tiles on the playing field, each with a 2 or a 4. With the arrow keys (up, down, right, left) the player moves the tiles on the playing field, whereby with each move all tiles move as far as possible as if they were sliding on the playing field tilted in the respective direction. If two tiles with the same number meet, they merge into one tile with the sum of the two tiles. In addition, with every move in an empty space, a random tile with a 2 or 4 is created. The probability that a random tile receives the value 4 is 10%.

The aim of the game is to form a tile with the number 2048. Then the player has won the game, but can continue to play. The game ends when all fields are covered with tiles and the player can no longer make a move.

In addition, there is a number of points that starts at zero at the start of the game and is increased by the value of the number of colliding tiles with each collision. It is displayed to the player along with their maximum score. The highest achievable tile has the value 131,072, the maximum possible number of points is 3,932,100.

Game idea

Gabriele Cirulli admitted on his GitHub page that the idea for the game came from Jason Saxon, who published the game in 1024 . The game 1024 is based on the game Threes published in January 2014 , which does not work with powers of two, but uses numbers that can be divided by 3.

reception

2048 was implemented for various platforms, such as mobile operating systems such as Android , iOS , Windows Phone and Ubuntu Phone or on the Nintendo 3DS . This resulted in a wide variety of variants, such as the game Flappy 2048 , in which the games Flappy Bird and 2048 served as inspiration. Other variants are e.g. B. 2048 Plus , in which the size of the playing field is adjustable, Numberwang 2048 , which is based on the fictional series Numberwang from That Mitchell and Webb Look , and the version 2048 Hexagons , in which the square shape of the boxes has been replaced by a hexagon shape .

The game was widely covered in the media in 2014. NDTV Gadgets called it "the newest contender for the most addicting game since Flappy Bird blew away". Mobiflip called it "an addicting game". After a few months, interest in the game decreased significantly.
