Life Is Strange 2 is a five-episode 3D adventure game by French developer Dontnod Entertainment , the first episode of which was published on September 26, 2018 by Japanese publisher Square Enix for Windows PCs and various consoles. It is the continuation of the 2015 released 3D adventure Life Is Strange and after Life Is Strange: Before the Storm and The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit the fourth game in the Life Is Strange universe.

Gameplay

Overall, the game mechanics are very similar to those from previous games in the Life Is Strange series. In Life Is Strange 2, too, the player's decisions have consequences in the further course of the game. The player plays Sean Diaz, who can influence the development of his younger brother Daniel, depending on what he teaches him and whether he is a good role model.

Decisions from the free mini-adventure The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit , which Dontnod Entertainment published in June 2018, are to be adopted in Life Is Strange 2 . The final decision from Life Is Strange should also have an impact on the game.

action

Episode 1: Roads

The main characters in the game are 16-year-old Sean Diaz and nine-year-old Daniel Diaz, who live in Seattle with their father, Esteban . On October 28, 2016, Sean plans to go to a Halloween party with his extroverted best friend Lyla . His main interest is to get closer to Jenn at the party, with whom he is in love. After preparing for the evening at home, he skyps with Lyla. Meanwhile he hears excited voices from outside. His younger brother Daniel has clashed with the xenophobic youthful son Brett. When Sean confronts Brett in front of the house, there is a fight between the two. Sean knocks Brett to the ground, Brett remains seriously injured. The police happened to drive past the house and thus became aware of the incident. The exiting policeman does not de-escalate and pulls out his service weapon. After Sean's father rushes over to calm the situation, but does not obey the policeman's request to lie down, the policeman pulls the trigger and kills Sean's father fatally. The shocked Daniel screams loudly, whereupon the policeman is thrown away by a shock wave. Sean was passed out for a short time, as was his brother. When he comes to, he sees both his dead father and the policeman, who is also lying dead in front of the burning police car. From a distance, sirens announce the arrival of further emergency services. Sean picks up Daniel and escapes from the crime scene.

After two days of escape, the brothers find themselves in Mount Rainier National Park . Daniel's mental health begins to deteriorate as he becomes homesick and misses his father, whose fate he cannot remember. Sean has to take responsibility for his very young and childishly playful brother in the forest and keep him happy, while he doesn't know how to proceed and how to convey what has happened to his brother. The brothers decide to set up camp for the night by a river. The next day, Sean and Daniel continue along the road until they come to a gas station where they want to replenish their scarce supplies. There Sean meets the journalist and blogger Brody, who is also resting there. After their shopping, they are held by the shop owner while they are discussing their further travel route and are finally locked up - the man had learned through the media that the two boys are being wanted by the police. With mutual help, Sean and Daniel manage to break free. When they want to leave the office of the gas station, the owner comes back. Daniel's supernatural ability suddenly breaks out again, throwing the man to the ground and devastating the store. Panicking, Sean and Daniel run outside into the pouring rain, looking for help. They see Brody sitting in his car, who takes the two of them along to help.

The brothers travel south with Brody through the night. When he suddenly hears a bark, Sean's attention turns to the back seat - Daniel has taken a puppy from the gas station with him unnoticed: Truffle (in the original: Mushroom ) then becomes the animal companion of the brother couple. In northern Oregon , travelers stop at a parking lot overlooking Arcadia Bay . Depending on the final decision of the player in the first part of Life is Strange , either the coastal city can be seen intact or destroyed. In a conversation, Sean tells desperately of his story. Brody tries to give him new courage. During the conversation, he decides for himself not to return to Seattle and surrender, but to make his way to his father's place of origin, Puerto Lobos in Mexico . A few miles further south, Brody abandons the brothers at a motel on the Pacific coast and says goodbye. He pays them a room for one night, gives them a backpack, some money and a bus ticket for the next day.

In the room, Sean sees the moment, also due to possible persecution by the police, to leave his old life behind: He throws away his cell phone. He also wants to tell Daniel what really happened. Before that conversation takes place, however, Daniel learns from the television news what happened in Seattle. He breaks down inside and asks Sean why he lied to him. His supernatural ability erupts again, but Sean manages to calm him down. The next day the brothers continue by bus.

Episode 2: Rules

The episode begins December 1, 2016 in the Willamette National Forest in inland Oregon. After a few days of escape, the brothers found an abandoned house in the snowy wilderness, where they have now found shelter. Daniel learns there, guided by Sean, to be able to move objects by means of telekinesis , to consciously control and improve it. But when Daniel begins to use his superpower in an increasingly careless way and to show it off, Sean admonishes him. He should be careful so that other people do not become aware of his ability.

With Daniel suffering from a worsening cough and running out of supplies, Sean is very concerned. At dinner he suggests that they seek help and shelter from their maternal grandparents, the Reynolds, in nearby Beaver Creek . The next morning when Sean and Daniel want to leave, their puppy Truffle is outside. Daniel goes in search of him while Sean makes the final preparations for departure. When Daniel finally doesn't come back either, Sean begins to worry. Following a trail of blood in the snow, Sean finds Daniel with the dead truffle . A cougar , who apparently killed the pup, approaches Daniel the moment Sean arrives. Daniel, angry and desperate about the loss of his friend, uses his ability to lift the cougar off the floor and, unless Sean intervenes, breaks his neck.

After a walk, the brothers reach Beaver Creek and are picked up by the Reynolds. The Reynolds are portrayed as typical conservative small town dwellers - Stephen presents himself as a caring and good-natured grandfather, but Claire is equally orderly and strict. Daniel in particular feels at home in the sheltered, homely atmosphere and begins to develop an interest in his mother's past, Karen's past, which is a taboo subject for Claire. Karen's former children's room on the upper floor is locked, Daniel and Sean are not allowed to enter it.

One day Daniel spotted ten-year-old boy next door, Chris Eriksen, in the garden when he fell from the ladder of his tree house. Thanks to his ability, he is able to absorb the fall. Here the plot connects directly to The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit . The imaginative Chris ( Captain Spirit ) then believes that he has saved himself from falling with his own superpowers. Daniel and Chris get along well immediately and become friends. The next morning, Sean wakes up alone in the guest room. Daniel secretly snuck up to Chris. When Sean comes to the Eriksen's house, he sees the two children playing with Chris' action figures . Daniel makes the figures float and makes Chris believe that he is responsible for it.

Then Chris' father Charles comes home - Chris, Daniel and Charles persuade Sean to accompany them to the Christmas market in town. Once there, Daniel is unsure whether to tell Chris the truth or not. The decision about this is up to the player. At the Christmas market, Sean meets the punk girl Cassidy, who is on her way to California for a "job" . When Sean and Daniel are back at the Reynolds' house, Daniel sees a chance to explore Karen's locked room, as the grandparents have not yet returned from their church attendance.

While Sean and Daniel are looking around their mother's old room, Claire and Stephen come back from the service and catch the two of them in Karen's room. There is an argument. It is reconciled very quickly, however, since Stephen cannot watch the argument and the rickety closet in his office falls on him. Here the decision is again up to the player whether or not Daniel should use his ability to free Stephen from under the cupboard.

Shortly afterwards, the police rings the doorbell. Claire opens the door and advises Sean and Daniel to escape through the back door. Depending on the decisions made so far, they immediately walk down the street when a second police car follows them. Chris can now step in to help them both. Either he is hit by a police car or not. In a third possibility, the brothers meet Chris in his garden, who reveals a secret escape route to them, so that there is no encounter with the police and Chris is not injured.

The last scene takes place in a wooded area, in which Sean gives Daniel the gift bought at the Christmas market - if one was bought or stolen - and a train drives by. The two jump up and go on a journey again.

Episode 3: Wastelands

The episode begins with a look back at a day a few weeks before the incident: Sean and Daniel get into an argument at home after Daniel sneaks into Sean's room and steals a watch. Her father ends the argument and confronts Sean to make it clear that he needs his help in raising Daniel. Sean gets along with Daniel again and allows him to keep the watch.

In the present, two months after their stay in Beaver Creek, Sean and Daniel have joined the group of Cassidy and her boyfriend Finn, who live as a commune in a California forest and work on the illegal marijuana farm in Merrill. One morning Sean sees his brother practicing knife throwing with Finn and realizes that Daniel is secretly using his powers. When Sean then admonishes him to behave inconspicuously, Daniel is irritated and instinctively pushes Sean back with his strength.

After a day of work on the farm, which Sean has spent cutting flowers, you can find out more about the individual group members by talking and walking around the camp and do clean-up work with Daniel. At his request, the two go to the nearby lake to train Daniel's strength again after a long time. After Daniel reveals to have already done this on his own, Sean asks him again for caution, to which Daniel reacts with weariness again. With the demand not to be treated like a child anymore, Daniel lifts the root of a sequoia tree out of the lake and then goes grumpily back to the camp. In the evening the group sits together around a campfire. Here the player has the option to go to sleep with Daniel or to sit by the campfire and get a new haircut.

The next day is payday at Merrill, which is why Merrill lets part of the group come to him. Daniel is left out because he is too young. Nonetheless, he sneaks into the living room and is discovered by Big Joe, Merrill's guard, and dragged by him to his superior. Merrill, who in any case only lets nine-year-old Daniel work on the farm as an exception, is now losing patience and refusing to pay those present. He also fires Sean and Daniel. When Big Joe starts to hit Daniel, he telekinesis steers an ashtray against his head. In anger, Big Joe turns to the rest of them asking who threw him off, and depending on the player's decision, Big Joe hits either Sean or Finn in the face.

Back at the camp, Sean confides in Cassidy and Finn Daniel's power and asks them to keep them confidential. This gives Finn the idea to break into Merrill and use Daniel's skills to steal the money from his safe, which Sean initially refuses. In another conversation with Finn, Sean can change his mind or confirm his decision. The decisions made so far can result in the possibility of Sean and Finn kissing. Cassidy finally gets Sean a tattoo and suggests they go swimming with him in the lake. Sean can agree or decline, with the former the two get closer, but only if Sean has decided against Finn. The player can decide whether to kiss Cassidy and then have sex with her, or to stay away from her.

During the night, Finn and Daniel make their way to Merrill's house with or without Sean and steal a car from Big Joe. When Sean is not there, he and Cassidy go into chase and meet them in Merrill's house just outside the vault. It is possible to open the safe and take a pistol out of it. However, the group is discovered by Merrill and threatened with a pump gun . Sean can now decide whether to encourage or discourage Daniel to use his strength against Merrill, or (if the safe was opened and the pistol was taken) Merrill shot at with the pistol. In the former, Merrill is thrown back, but draws a gun and shoots Daniel. The other two possibilities result in Merrill shooting Finn. In any case, Daniel becomes so angry that he finally ravages the entire house with a blast wave, knocking everyone present unconscious. The next morning Daniel disappeared and Sean's eye was injured by a broken glass.

Episode 4: Faith

As a result of the accident, Sean was in a coma and lost his sight. He has been in the hospital for two months now and is having to get used to seeing with only one eye. He is treated by the good-natured nurse Joey and regularly questioned by FBI agent Flores about the incident in Seattle. Sean receives his diary from Joey, in which he finds a transcript from Jacob, a member of the commune, from which he learns that the latter took care of Daniel and brought him to his hometown of Haven Point , Nevada . During the night, Sean decides to flee the hospital. To do this, he rips a loose towel rail out of its anchorage and can use it to lure his police station or Joey into the room and knock them out (in the latter case the guard takes a break so Sean can escape). Alternatively, Sean can break the lock on his window and escape via scaffolding, where in another room you can either see Finn and talk to him, or (if Finn did not survive) the sleeping Merrill.

Sean shorts out a car and makes his way to Haven Point. At night he stops off a country road to sleep. He is suddenly interrupted when two locals drag him out of the car and accuse him of having entered their property without permission. In the course of the conversation, the racist attitude of the two spokesman becomes apparent when he begins to harass Sean because of his Mexican origin. In order to humiliate him even further, he asks Sean to sing a song, which Sean can obey or refuse. Depending on the situation, Sean is either spared or beaten up by the racist before he lets him drive away.

Lacking gasoline, Sean ends up in the hot desert landscape and has to move on on foot. A truck driver stops and agrees to take him away. Sean can accept or decline the offer. With the former, the driver proves helpful and offers him something to eat, with the latter, Sean has to walk the rest of the way to Haven Point.

Once there, posters and the centrally located Sean Church point to the strong religiousness of the community. In a sermon that is currently taking place, Sean sees Daniel being praised as a "miracle" by Pastor Lisbeth and how he, as "Angel Daniel", displays his telekinetic skills in front of the awesome visitors. After the service, Sean meets Jacobs' sick sister, Sarah Lee, who leads him to Daniel. After an initially warm reunion, Sean quickly realizes that Daniel is heavily influenced by the pastor and shows no interest in leaving the church. When Sean loses patience and tries to force Daniel to come with him, the altar boy Nicholas grabs him and forcibly takes him outside. Sean decides to defend himself against Nicholas, but he knocks him to the ground. He then meets his mother Karen, who has also come to help Daniel, but initially retires to a motel with Sean.

There Sean learns that it was Jacob who contacted Karen and calls him to arrange a meeting point with him. Sean, who feels a lot of disappointment for his mother, asks her why she left him, Esteban and especially Daniel, who never saw her. Karen explains that she did not want to indulge in the social pressures she was exposed to in her role as mother and wife and that she sought her fortune as a dropout in an independent life. The player can show understanding for Karen with his decisions or reject her.

Sean and Karen meet with Jacob and come up with a plan to free both Daniel and Sarah Lee from the clutches of the community. For this, Sean and Jacob sneak into Lisbeth's house and find u. a. found out that she founded Haven Point after being expelled from her previous fellowship. Sean also discovers that Lisbeth is withholding Sarah Lee's medical treatment for her pneumonia and documents for an application for Daniel's adoption . Sean and Jacob have to hide from Nicholas, who might discover them.

Either with Karen or forced by Nicholas, Sean then enters the church where Daniel is with Lisbeth. Sean and Karen try to persuade him to break away from Lisbeth, with Karen revealing himself to Daniel as his mother. After Sean tries to grab Daniel, the latter pushes him back with a pressure wave, knocking candles over, causing a fire. With his discoveries in Lisbeth's house, Sean tries to convince Daniel that she is manipulating him. Nicholas hits Sean in the face several times to silence him. When Lisbeth finally tells Nicholas to shoot Sean with his pistol, Daniel steps in and pushes Nicholas aside. After Lisbeth stands in the way and blocks the exit, it depends on the decisions made so far, whether Daniel just clears her aside with his strength or breaks her neck; alternatively, Sean can shoot her. Sean, Daniel and Karen then leave the burning church.

Jacob has meanwhile managed to free his sister and says goodbye to the three who are now on their way to Mexico.

Episode 5: Wolves

Karen took Sean and Daniel to their Away Commune , a trailer park in the Arizona desert , where she and others live secluded from society. The two brothers spend a night at the Grand Canyon to watch the morning sunrise. Daniel uses his powers to make a scorpion soar and Sean can warn him to leave it alone.

Back in Away, the player can take a look at the camp and get to know a few residents. These include the couple Stanley and Arthur, as well as the artist Joan, who makes sculptures from scrap. Daniel, whose strength does not bother anyone in the commune, helps Joan build another sculpture and Sean can decide what it looks like. You can then go on a treasure hunt set up by Daniel. Karen eventually returns from shopping with David , another member of the commune. As you learn from a conversation with David, he is Chloe Price's stepfather from the first part, who divorced his wife and regrets his behavior back then.

That night Karen takes her two sons on a trip to the canyon. In doing so, she explains to the two of them that she saw the FBI while shopping, which has followed her to this point. Sean and Daniel realize that they have to move on and they raise three sky lanterns that Karen brought with them into the night sky. The next morning, Sean has another opportunity to look around David's trailer. There are many allusions to the first part, including a. a photo of the older Chloe and Max , if Chloe survived in the first part. David gives Sean a police radio and shows him the route to Mexico on the map. When saying goodbye to Karen, Sean can hug her or refuse.

Sean and Daniel finally reach the Mexican border by car . Over the radio, they learn that Karen has been taken into police custody in Away. Daniel breaks open the steel border fence with the greatest effort of his strength. However, the two do not get to cross the border, as Daniel is grazed with a graze on the arm and passed out. An armed American couple drives into a pickup truck and the woman pushes Sean to the ground. Shortly afterwards, the US border guards appear and arrest Sean and Daniel as well as the two militants.

In a border guard cell, Sean meets two Mexican refugees who have also been arrested. Sean is then interrogated and accused of all previous incidents, from the death of the police officer in Seattle to the fire in the church in Haven Point, as deliberate crimes. Daniel uses his strength to free Sean from the interrogation room and lead him outside. On the way you can free the Mexican couple and the militants, and it can also happen that Daniel kills two police officers. The two drive their car back to the Mexican border, where they expect a police presence. The player can now decide whether to stand or drive on and use Daniel's strength to push his way through the border. This results in two endings, depending on whether or not Sean raised Daniel morally in the course of the game.

Sean decides to face a morally good ending: Sean is convicted and ends up in jail. Daniel is not blamed because of his age and he is subsequently raised by his grandparents. After 15 years, Sean is released from prison and met by Daniel, Karen and possibly Lyla. Together, Sean and Daniel go once more to the forest at the location of the first stop on their escape. Sean starts crying and is comforted by Daniel before the two say goodbye and drive off in different directions.

Sean decides to face a morally bad ending: Daniel prevents Sean from getting out and steers the car with his strength through the police barricade. However, Sean is shot and dies. Six years later, Daniel gets his money through raids in Puerto Lobos. When he finally sits alone on the beach and draws, he is attacked by a gang of three, but keeps them at bay with his strength.

Sean decides to cross the border with a morally good ending: Daniel clears the way and shortly after throws himself out of the car so that Sean drives to Mexico alone. Daniel is staying with his grandparents and six years later he receives a letter from Sean, which shows that he has settled in Puerto Lobos either alone, with Cassidy or with Finn. Daniel is wearing an ankle cuff here .

Sean decides to cross the border with a morally bad ending: Daniel gets out of the car and uses his strength with more violence. The two arrive in Puerto Lobos and set up a car repair shop modeled on their father, but become criminals and do not shy away from violence.
