The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit is a free 3D adventure in the Life-Is-Strange universe, developed by Dontnod Entertainment and published by Square Enix . It was released on June 25, 2018 for Windows , PlayStation 4 , and Xbox One as a demo of Life Is Strange 2 .

action

The main character of the game is the ten-year-old Christopher "Chris" Eriksen, who creates the superhero alter ego Captain Spirit in order to cope with the loss of his mother. Chris lives in Beaver Creek, Oregon with his father Charles . As Captain Spirit, Chris mixes reality with his imagination and visits alien planets and fights against various opponents in his imagination. Chris also goes on a treasure hunt, at the end of which he discovers old family photos with his mother. Towards the end of the game, Chris falls from his tree house in the garden and is saved from the impact by real superpowers. Chris sees the brothers Sean and Daniel Diaz, the main characters in Life Is Strange 2 .

Gameplay

The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit is a 3D adventure game set in the same universe as Life Is Strange . Three years after the events in the original game, the player slips into the role of Chris Eriksen or his superhero alter-ego Captain Spirit. His costume is customizable, the environment can be interacted with and the game includes small tasks such as a treasure hunt and exploring an alien planet. Dialog trees are used to respond to non-player characters . The decisions of the player in The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit are said to have consequences in Life Is Strange 2 , where Chris will also appear.

Production notes

In June 2018, Dontnod Entertainment announced the game The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit at Microsoft's E3 press conference , which is a spin-off from Life Is Strange and an introduction to the universe of Life Is Strange 2 . According to the developers, the idea for the game came about when they developed a number of new characters for Life Is Strange 2 and saw in many of them the potential to tell more about their backgrounds. The result is a game with an independent storyline, which, in addition to references to the original game (e.g. a letter from the Blackwell Academy known from Life is Strange ), also contains references to the storyline and location of Life Is Strange 2 and, like Life Is Strange: Before the Storm , largely retains the visual appearance and gameplay of the original game. A special feature of Captain Spirit is that, unlike the previous games, it was not published in episode format and is also free. The game was released on June 25, 2018 for Windows , PlayStation 4 , and Xbox One .

Metacritic aggregated a total of 31 reviews of the game with an average rating of 79% (Windows version), 78% (Xbox One version) and 75% (PS4 version). Joe Juba from Game Informer rated the game positively and particularly praised the representation of Chris' fantasy and its counterpart in reality. The clear connections with Life Is Strange 2 held a lot of excitement in store for him. Game Revolution's Michael Leri enjoyed playing as Captain Spirit. The character's function of breaking through the mundane makes the interactions more lively. Leri, however, criticizes the rather mediocre dialogues. GameSpot's James O'Connor thinks Chris is a good, likeable character. He also praises the visually strong cutscenes. The characters are partly too clichéd for him. Louisa Blatt from IGN finds the father-son relationship emotionally compassionate, and at no point would she have been bored with the plot. However, Blatt criticized the primary game mechanics and that the puzzles were too easy for her.
